Codemasters has confirmed that off-road racer Colin McRae: DiRT 2 is currently in development. The game is set to arrive on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 sometime in 2009.
Despite Colin McRae's death shortly after the release of Colin McRae: DiRT, the sequel will still carry his name outside North America (the North American version has always been known simply as DiRT). The development team is approaching the project as a tribute to his career. "The decision was made jointly between Codemasters and the McRae family," said DiRT 2 executive producer Gavin Raeburn in an interview with IGN. "His ventures into events such as the X-Games, Dakar Rally and the Race of Champions have inspired us to look at events covering the extremes of off-road motorsport."
The sequel will use an enhanced version of the EGO game engine used in the first DiRT to enable better texture detail and environment modelling, among other things. The multiplayer mode, arguably the weak point of the original game, is "all new" for the sequel according to Raeburn.
