In the previous article about a similar subject, a lot of commotion was raised over the statement of the Xbox 360 carrying the PS3, when it comes to third-party software. Well, had the 360 not been around who knows how long gamers would have been waiting for third-party titles to be released. The one fact a lot of people tend to miss out on is that it is, without a shadow of a doubt, easier to program and design a game for the Xbox 360. Not only are the design tools easier (i.e., if you can program a simple PC game, you can program a simple Xbox 360 game,) they are also cheap enough to allow designers to drop brand new games under the $40 and $50 price point. Games such as Silpheed and the recently released Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant hit retail shelves without the market-high $60 a pop price tag. And while the games may not be that good (or they might be downright terrible, like Vampire Rain), they still afford developers a cheap alternative for making games on a “next-gen” console. Something we have yet to see on the PS3, outside of their PSN titles.
The other problem is accessibility. In order for the PS3 to dominate within the time frame that some analysts’ have predicted, as the story suggests on DMWMedia or as it was pointed out in People’s Daily Online (among many others). The PS3 would need a software library that can be built on accessibility. This is something else the PS3 lacks, something that was discussed in another article here on Blend Games. The development struggles with the multi-threaded structure have yet to cease, and some developers have outsourced to other third-party engineers to help with the problem. So you end up having third-party developers, hiring third-party developers.
Now this is not to be misconstrued as a fact for all developers who are designing games for the PS3. As some of them are more familiar with the architecture than others, and some of them can better utilize certain functions more efficiently than other developers. However, this does not alleviate the problem of having games of equal complexity as those found on the Xbox 360, but developed within the same time-frame. PS3 hardware takes longer to learn and longer to flesh out, which certainly does work against it when measuring up the sales. A year difference between releases can certainly sway a good number of gamers who might specifically buy the system for a specific game. And delays for games such as Brothers In Arms, The Last Remnant and Alone In The Dark will continue to work against the PS3 on the software availability spectrum, as well as accessibility when it comes to developing games.
All of the fore-mentioned, in turn, can work against shifting units for the PS3. And as the numbers have shown over the past few months, shifting units should be a very important thing for Sony. Whether you want to argue price point, game selection, or consumer interest, Sony would probably prefer that the PS3 aims to outsell its PS2 at some point in monthly sales, during this console race. And with the looming gloom of forecasts showing Japan and Europe consumers giving almost double the console sales to the Xbox 360 for the month of September, it’s no longer about the PS3 dominating in 2010, but just staying in the market by 2010.
Nevertheless, all is not down and dolor for the PlayStation brand. Hope does linger in the camp of Sony and it resides in the one place they have yet to look: the PlayStation 3. Yes, Sony’s golden ticket to success is already their golden ticket. The real question is why they haven’t used it yet? I can’t answer that for you. But what they can do is redirect the PlayStation 3 from simply being a console game machine that – from the standard point of view of a casual consumer – looks awfully similar to the Xbox 360, when it comes to gaming, to an actual play-station. The PS3 is still the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market for all of what you get; and Blu-Ray is the new standard format next to the original DVD.
Everyone who wants HD movie playback will have to get a Blu-Ray player, eventually. So why has Sony not used the PS3 to leverage sales from the consumer electronics market? It would definitely help build back up their brand supremacy. And at present, the PS3 is simply going to continue to lose sales to the Xbox 360 if the price-points stay as diverse as they are. Sony should instead focus the PlayStation 3's multiple functionality as a electronic device to consumers looking for that kind of diversity: promotions should be used to further elaborate the Linux compatibility; marketing tactics should be put in place to sell the PS3 as the best Blu-Ray player on the market (even if it’s not); and Sony should really point out that PSN is free.
I’m not sure how long Sony will continue to let the PS3 slide into the backseat of this console race, but it sure as heck isn’t doing them any favors, especially if they're to meet the analyst prediction of dominating in 2010. However, by reversing their marketing tactics and focusing on potential Blu-Ray player consumers, gamers looking for free network gaming, and casual gamers looking for a casual experience with Home, LBP, etc., they might meet the 2010 deadline. It seems to be the one tactic Sony has yet to use, and I’m curious how long they’re going to wait before making their move.

Well this is a classic example of duh. The development argument is old and tired and really has no merit. The PS3 is now no harder to code for than any other console and is in fact becoming the lead dev console by a lot of companies. As for availability of software, do you live in a cave? Then there is the fact that the PS3 attained the 15 mil sold mark way faster than the Xbox 360 has. Oh did I mention that there are only 6 million more Xbox 360s sold worldwide than PS3s even with a one year head start? Last but not least is this... The hard to develop for argument/excuse was used in the PS2/Xbox era. We all see how that ended up. Remember, history has a tendency to repeat itself and this time is no different than the last.
Seriously take your head out of micrsofts ass so you can smell reality. Sony has better software than MS. And it has been outselling them for a year you hack.
Better software like Bioshock? Oh wait . . horrible frame rate issues, bad graphics. Why don't you buy last years game, it's half priced for the 360, and doesn't have frame rate issues or bad graphics.
Sony is going to abandon the Ps3, it's the latest and greatest laser disc technology.
I have to agree with just about everything you say here, except two things.
Number one, Sony has tried the "cheapest Blu-Ray player" approach again and again. It's simply not working. They need more. They need to bring Home online and pray to God it kicks ass against XB360s already established Live community.
Number two, you don't need Blu-Ray for HD. I'm currently renting flicks off of the XBL marketplace in 720p and Netflix is available through a Media Center PC and will be soon directly through the XBox Experience update. I'm looking at my home collection (totalling 3000+ DVDs and VHS tapes) and thinking to myself, "Why upgrade? I can take that money and pay for a Netflix account and not have to worry about upgrading. Considering that I can rent it online for 278 years compared to the cost of updating my collection again, why bother with Blu-Ray?
It's been very consistent that the company that releases the super high tech/expensive consoles over the history of gaming has failed to perform. And even with a "10 year" lifecycle, which is crap, i don't think they'll ever break even.
Will, I do agree with some of your points about not needing Blu-Ray for HD content.
But take into account that a lot of people may not have a Netflix account, or may not have a high-speed connection to access HD movies. For the casual consumer who might risk getting into HD, an HD device would probably be their best bet.
All your links are either from 2006 or your own written stuff. These things have changed. The PS3 as outsold the 360 all year long except for the last few weeks and the development argument isn't valid anymore.
So is the thing about Sony not making money on the console they made. That has changed my friend. Research more next time. I think you're right saying it won't dominate 2010, but we are far from that time, and your argumentation is very very flawed.
You mean titles like Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, White Knight Chronicles, Quantum Theory, Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3 exclusive), Motorstorm Pacific Rift and SOCOM. You're right... they have NO software at all. The XBox 360 has Gears 2, Fable 2 and Banjo Kazooie. You sir fail at flaming. Now next time you try to make a point do so before eating a bowl of failios for breakfast.
I agree that for someone that does not have a high speed internet connection, Blu-Ray may be the choice route. However, you have to consider that according to the Leichtman Group, as of August of this year, there were over 65 million broadband internet subscribers totalling well over 50% of the households in the United States. (http://www.leichtmanresearch.com/press/081108release.html)
With that, you can't possibly leverage the "Everyone who wants HD movie playback will have to get a Blu-Ray player, eventually." line which Sony has done repeatedly since the release of the PS3.
What they need is a killer app. They had Metal Gear Solid, but aside from the pre-release hype and the reviewer controversy that followed (People getting slammed for writing less than a perfect 10), I hadn't heard anything else about it. If the super huge games aren't there, the PS3 won't sell. Microsoft learned this in Japan. Now that they have some exclusive RPGs over there, the system is finally starting to sell.
What more killer app. do you want than Little Big Planet? How about Resistance 2, Killzone 2 or White Knight Chronicles? Not to mention just because people have broadband they are going to download HD content. First off most broadband providers have a cap on their subscriber lines. Some as low as 5gig/mo and some as high as 250gig/mo. Not only that but with Blu-Ray you OWN the media and it can be played on other Blu-Ray devices whereas a HD movie downloaded to a console/PC is viewable on that medium only. Also optical media has a longer shelf life and far less chance of failure than magnetic media (i.e. Hard Drive).
Wow you really do talk out of your ass, and here's me thinking the last article you wrote was about as bad as it could get - congratulations this one is full of even more crap! You really shouldn't talk rubbish about things you clearly don't understand and pass yourself off as knowledgeable!
FACT - The PS3 in it's first 2 years on the market has sold FASTER than the 360's first 2 years on the market (despite the various advantages the 360 had over the PS3 at their respective launches i.e. price, games, delays, press, competition etc), in fact the PS3 has sold 3 million units more at this stage in it's lifecycle than the 360 had. I also seem to recall the PS3 outselling the 360 on a month by month basis for quite a large portion of this year, until MS made drastic price cuts!
FACT - More and more major developers are learning how the PS3 ticks, and more are switching to use the PS3 as the PRIMARY DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM. Even the PS3 hating Valve are starting to warm to the hardware! It is the exact same criticism that was made against the PS2 when it was released, but 120+ million unit sales later and you don't tend to hear people mention it anymore...
FACT - WipeOut HD, Warhawk, R&C: Quest for Booty, GT5:Prologue are all major value releases - just because their primary distribution method is the PSN is irrelevant! Further more these titles have had accompanying budget priced Boxed versions at retail in some regions. You also have the Platinum range of budget releases.
FACT - The PlayStation Network is a much easier place for Indy developers to get their foot in the door. Unlike Microsoft’s greedy fees for developing for Live Arcade, it's much easier for unique and quirky titles to get a presence on PSN. That is why on LIVE Arcade you find countless over-priced Retro re-releases and CAPCOM shooters, and on the PSN you find titles such as flOw, Flower, PixelJunk Monsters, PixelJunk Eden, Everyday Shooter, The Last Guy, Linger In Shadows to name but a few.
FACT - Sony own and make money off the PS2 (as they do with the PSP), the fact it's still successful 10 years on is not bad news for them! In fact it vindicates their 10 year life cycle strategy it adopted with the PS3 - it's like you saying 2 years into the PS2's lifecycle that it will fail because it's not sold more than the PS1 yet! Just because Microsoft have all their eggs in one 360 shaped basket doesn't make them any more successful! The fact the PS2 still sells so well also proves that there's still a large untapped market of gamers waiting to move to the next-gent consoles. These PS2 sales are probably casual gamers and can be viewed as taking sales from the graphically-equal Wii as opposed to taking sales from the PS3 (which they may well upgrade to in a few years).
FACT - Just about every console in recent years, with the exception of the Wii, has relied on the strategy of selling their console at a loss for market share in order to make money on things like software licensing and game sales later on in it's life cycle, in the PS3's case Sony were also counting on it winning the HD war as selling PS3's at a loss would cost them less than a failed Blu-ray format would. The PS2 used the exact same strategy, as did the original Xbox and the 360. In 2009 Sony will switch to a 45nm Cell to greatly reduce costs and other factors like economies of scale and the learning curve effect will also help substantially reduce production costs, until eventually (probably 2010) the PS3 slim will be launched. By the time the PS4 is released it will cost as much to make a PS3 as it does to make a PS2 today, and they'll be sold just as cheaply.
FACT - The PS3 is widely regarded by Home Cinema dealers/magazines as the best value (and usually best quality) Blu-ray player on the market. So I'm not even sure what crap you're babbling on about in your last few paragraphs. The PS3 is doing very well in the consumer electronics market and you're just as likely to be able to buy a PS3 in a local high-end AV dealer as you are in your local toy shop.
You really should do some research, or better still stop writing for the Games section of Cinema blend. You are clearly a raging Xbox Fanboy who is so blinkered that you have no idea of what's truly happening in the gaming market. If I owned this website I think I would have you reassigned to another area...
I'm not saying that there aren't any good games for PS3. Personally I enjoyed Drake's Fortune and MGS4. And once again, the hype for LBP, Resistance2, and Killzone2 is big (I haven't read much on White Knight, but I'm selective in my games), but there's big hype and actual killer apps.
Back in the day for Sony it was Final Fantasy and Twisted Metal. For Xbox it was, and still is Halo. Sony was hoping that MGS4 would be it, but it seems to have fizzled.
So until we see how the sales for the games you listed do, we won't really know for sure. Unfortunately, a lot of games that were originally exclusives fell out and went to the XB360 platform as well, and I think that's a good chunk of why Sony is still behind in the numbers. Until they have a game that is going to draw the 360 crowd, or a serious price break, or an online environment comparable to Live, I think they'll be stuck in a rut.
As far as owning the content, yes I have DRM content. But a lot of the content I have purchased is mine to keep on my devices. There's always the ownership of the physical media as another point, and I'm not discounting it. I just don't believe that Sony or anyone else can say it's "the only way to go" anymore and should be considered.
There are some major innacuracies in your article, including the fact that the PS3 is now breaking even ofr making a profit on a per consoel sold basis, and since January 08
http://gizmodo.com/344141/ps3-production-cost-down-50-sony-finally-breaking-even
Or that the PS3 has sold more than the 360 during the 07 holidays and onward 6 months out of 8 in 2008. The 360 had to go through -two- price cuts in 08 to try to maintain its market share...
This article should be proofread by somebody with a little more facts than Mr Usher ;)
PS3Owner, while those might be valid points from the standpoint of optimism for the PS3, even Sony is not as pleased with the PS3 as you are.
Sony actually has to restructure their efforts to compensate for the lack of dividends their gaming section is providing in profits. In other words, the PS3 is costing Sony a pretty penny. The link near the top of the article says it all:
http://www.forbes.com/afxnewslimited/feeds/afx/2008/06/26/afx5155959.html
Another thing, Xbox Live Arcade is EXTREMELY well regarded by the indie scene. How would I know this? I interviewed the indie developers. Sony, alternatively, wants exclusive rights to indie projects. As you may have noticed you won't see too many duplicate PSN games on PC. Again, I interviewed both sides to get a take on what the process was like for all three companies. Microsoft's Arcade is the most sought after, but Nintendo is the most accepting (especially if the game makes use of the Wii-mote).
The problem with Live Arcade, though, is that developers express how difficult it is getting the games signed because of the amount of developers trying to get their games on Live. It's a grueling, long process because of the doors it opened up for the indie scene. I'm not sure why it takes MS so long to approve many of these titles, but like the Wii Homebrew, there are a lot of developers waiting in the wings to get their games out there for the casual consumer.
So it's not true that only Sony and PSN offer the indie scene an alternative for casual or independent development.
And Greg, I said the PS3 was being out-sold "nearly" every month on end. It is true that there have been times in which the PS3 has out-sold the Xbox 360, thanks in most part to its Japanese consumers.
Also, the article you provided doesn't explain the cost difference between manufacturing the 80gb PS3 and the profit gain for Sony. It merely suggests that the cost of production is down.
Your comments are full of contradictions, it's clear that the PS3 is still a difficult console to program and the reason some dev have chosen to make the PS3 lead console in developement is because they know that once they can get the game up and running on it, they know it will be easy to replicate it on the 360, it's not flattering to the PS3 as usually you would use the least powerful hardware as lead so you know that you haven't created something that is too hardware demanding for the console you're porting to and i'm not trying to say that the 360 is more powerful than PS3, just that any advantage the cell has over the 360's zenos is lost in the complexity of programming on it. So far the only game to show a level of graphics not yet seen on the 360 is LBP and they achieved it by stripping the game down to a run and jump retro side-scroller and focusing all the hardwares resources on near photorealistic graphics, something i would imagine could be achieved on a 360 retro side-scrolling game should they choose to make one.
Some people just don't understand that THERE IS A REASON if Sony didn't drop the price of the PS3 yet. This reason is, the PS3 has sold quite well (and faster than the 360) even with its high price. And this holyday, with the huge amount of stunning games coming out (and the new 160 GB PS3 and that little thing called Home), surely the PS3 will sell millions of units! People will buy a PS3 despite of its high price, because of the wondeful games and features. Me too, for instance.
Then, next year, Sony will surely cut the price of the PS3 and make it more accessible to people. This, in addiction to a new wave of amazing titles like Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, MAG, FF XIII (still exclusive in Japan) and others games still to be unveiled, will assure another great year for the PS3. And so on.
I think we really are on the edge of a huge twist. The PS3 is finally beginning to rock, and it won't stop so easily. After this holyday nothingh will be the same.
Think about it. Remember my words.
Oh... just another thing. Microsoft was FORCED to cut the price of the 360, in order to be competitive on the market and survive this holyday. This is a sign of a wekness. The 360 is about to die and be replaced by the new Xbox. There is no way it can avoid to be outsold by the PS3 in the next couple of years.
These PS3 fans can't swallow their medacine. I guess they dont like the taste of cum anymore.
This console race is over:
$200 Arcade 360
+
$20 Hardrive
= The PS3 has no chance because they have a smaller market to sell too, a higher shelf price, higher development costs, and no competative advantage when it comes to software. Sony's best hope is an Apple buyout when the house of cards comes crashing down.
Hey Darkseider, I like how you say all the upcoming games for the 360 and ps3. The article is talking about software library dickwad. LIBRARY doesn't mean upcoming games. What if killzone 2 is crap, what if banjo is crap, what if resistance is crap, what if fable is crap. Don't talk shit, untill the game comes out. What if it turns out to be a too human performance. On a better note, I agree with your article.
Companies are continually restructuring and developing new strategies, if that link is trying to prove that the PS3 is a failure because Sony are being stung by the early development costs on their bottom line then by the same logic you must surely have thought the PS2 was doomed to fail early in it's lifecycle too.
The following article, one I just chose at random from the early PS2 doom stories, paints a grim picture of Sony suffering huge losses at the hands of it's newly launched console:

PS3Owner, if the article was about PS3 success, then it would be a different story. Yes, the PS3 sold more units faster than the Xbox 360 (thanks to Japanese consumers) and managed to get its foot in the door despite its price the first year out.
However, the article was about the PS3's possibilities for dominance in 2010.
Added to this, the article you posted (regarding the PS2) was before the Xbox or Gamecube made a dent in the industry. Remember the doom-and-gloom factor for the Xbox 360 when it launched in 2005? When the Wii and PS3 came along and the 360 still shifted more units in the month of November of 2006, and reporters were all "look how good the 360 is now".
In comparison to the PS2, though, the PS3 isn't far off from being successful, but it's not doing well compared to the competition either (namely the Wii).
no one seems to understand that this isnt the 80s, theres room in the video game market for competetive systems, because it has grown exponentialy from the days of the nes, or even ps1. wiis are for kids, xbox is for teens, ps3 is for grownups. each company is doing an amazing job catering to their demographic, but no one is really encroaching on nintendos turf too hard. that said, people grow up, next year xbots will be hungry for new games like i was at the end of the ps2 era, and plunk down for a ps3. and a year after the wii kids will be getting one.
its a brave new world.
lets just be happy the industry is thriving!
The development argument has TONS of merit. The PS3 is harder to develop for because it requires double the time. Take Devil May Cry 4 for instance. In the PS3 version, EVERY SINGLE level has to be made from scratch with it's own code menu, lighting and textures. In the 360 version, one main menu of code, textures and lighting can be used to create each level. This is where the 360 saves 3 to 7 Gigs and probably a few months right off the bat. The PS3 also needs to add extra artificial lighting and textures in almost every game ( GTA is a huge one ) because the Cell can't produce Real Time effects the same way the 360's processors can, the Cell wasn't intended to produce those types of calculations.
18 levels of DMC 4 takes a significantly larger dent out of Capcom's pockets when being developed for PS3 because time is money.
This is where you get the 5 to 10 minutes pre-installs on PS3, the Cell can't produce these games straight from disc, it needs to filter in the pre-install info from the HDD while the game is being played, all the while your HDD is racking up around 5 Gigs per game. When PS3's library get's to a good point then your HDD will be full from pre-installs more then likely, forcing you to get a larger HDD after you just paid for this one. You can always just manage it as well but it's harder for PS3 because you have to have that pre-installed info before you can play that game so you can erase and re-install if you want.
Where Sony messed up was betting the house on Blu Ray, they are counting on the royalties from companies that use blu ray technology and movie studios. If Sony cut the price of PS3 to compete in the game market , then they would alienate and piss off their buddies in the blu ray market by selling a blu ray player at a loss.
How can you say that? Are you a programmer or something?
More important: who cares? I'm a gamer after all, not a developer. I want to play good games. The PS3 has good games. That's all I need to know.
Yes, we all know the PS3 is harder to develop for compared to the Xbox 360. But I can still play Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, etc., so who cares?
I'm not interested in how many time, money and resources they put in the development of these games. If they didn't believe in the possibility to made a profit developing on PS3, they simply wouldn't have made that choice. But they did, right? So, please stop with this stupid development argument. Leave this stuff to the developers. We aren't in the industry and we're uneware of a lot of things.
From my perspective, the PS3 is a great console and I'm going to buy one very soon. If you prefer the 360, go and buy a 360. That's all.
And please... don't talk about the hard disk. I can buy a 500 GB hard disk for my PS3 for less than 140 €. While a 120 GB hard disk for the 360 is priced 180 €.
Space on the hard disk isn't - and never will be - an issue for PS3 owners. ;)
"I'm currently renting flicks off of the XBL marketplace in 720p"
1).720p vs 1080p is not only about resolution, it is also about 'Bit-rate'.
XBOX Live video uses VC-1 (720p) codec with 6.8 Mbits/s (DVD average is 5 Mbits/s with about 10 max bit rate).
Blu-ray 1080p with 40 Mbits/s. 'Transformers' averages about 32 Mbits/s with max 38 Mbits/s.
For some people whole HD do not matter, they just want to watch a movie, but still XBOX 720p NOT EQUAL to Blu-ray 1080p.
@The Guy
2) "....Cell can't produce Real Time effects the same way the 360's processors can, the Cell wasn't intended to produce those types of calculations"
I don't really know what you are talking about (I'm assuming you do) but aren't real time lighting effects float-pointing calculation-heavy? Because if they are than Cell can handle them very well. The biggest problem with developing for PS3 is not the cell itself but the fact that it is new technology. There is no collective experience with multiple libraries of code gradually build for over last 30 years just like it is a case for Intel or PowerPc. One have to understand that programming for Cell is DATA centric process compering to traditional which is CODE centric one. And that is a concept that is kind of difficult for some devs to comprehend. Well .....Change is good - at least Obama says so!
Why are so many not reading things properly? The PS3's sales have become stagnated at the wrong time, just before the holidays. They will be number 3 worldwide in sales for the remainder of this year and it's due to the price, not the games. Sony cannot afford another price cut and like the article states Sony has yet made a profit. Look at Microsoft last generation trying to sum up sales with better hardware and losing money month after month. Without 3rd party exclusives the PS3 just isn't as enticing as the PS2 was, to publishers or to consumers. Expect a PS4 in 3 years.
For dumb people....that say Bioshock looks bad for PS3, then you didn't heard that they are working on fixing it up as well as thanks to PS3 owners that played the demo an ask why is this wrong and so on. It help 2K to see what they did wrong an fix it, so far the PS3 isn't a bad system at all as well as their updates work by what people want on it and thats something that I don't think MS is doing. So far Homes is going to be alot better then anything the 360 comes out with as for it being kick ass, well only time will time as well as alot of work from us beta testers.
Sony gambled it's gaming division for Blu Ray. You don't need it to play games. The only game that even piqued my interest was MGS4 and I still couldn't force myself to spend that much just for a couple of games. I, like most consumers these days, are keeping it on the lean side when it comes to spending money. Personally I don't care for the Wii, but I purchased 2 for my kids because at least they were affordable (and yes I had to get two because of the age groups and to avoid infighting). If the Blu Ray would have been forced to stand on it's own it might have not won the format war but by incorporating it into the PS3 the cost of the machine easily rose 100%. If Sony would have at least given consumers the choice they would probably be kicking MS's a** left and right. And if you don't think I'm right look at all the people who are purchasing the Arcades. To me it's not a wise choice, but it's an entry level machine for people who can't afford a better package right now but are aching to get in on the fun with their friends. IMO we're starting to see the beginning of the end for exclusivity. The games are becoming too expensive to make for a developer put all his eggs in one basket. That means the console makers have to pay more attention to pricing the consoles as not to turn away consumers. The Wii had that pegged from the word go!
One thing that should be mentioned is that Xbox is and will always be dead in Japan. I think Americans should pull their heads out of their asses and realize that we are not the only market. Oh ya and the software argument... ive played Gears of War and Ive played Bioshock(which the Ps3 gets) and ive played Metal Gear Solid 4, and im sorry to say XBOX fans that youve been one upped. The best way for the PS3 fans to win this debate is to simply wait 1 to 2 years and then see where we are, i can promise you that things will be a bit clearer.
SHUT UP! MY HEAD HURTS FROM ALL THIS PSYCHO BABBALLLLL? OK. SMALLER CHEAPER CELL'S. MORE UNITS IN 2 YEARS THAN THE 360 (13M 360 15M FOR PS3). THE PS3 PROVIDES 10YR'S OF GAMING (PS1 AND PS2) SO IN THE LONG RUN IT MEANS MORE GAMES. IN 2009 DEVELOPERS PLAN TO HAVE 100% OF THE XBOX 360'S POWER UNTAPED AND ONLY 1 YEAR TO DO ANYTHING WITH IT. SO IT TAKES 4 TO 5 YR'S FOR DEVELOPERS TO GET THE POWER THEY NEED TO MAKE TRULY THE BLOCK BUSTER GAMES THAT A CONSOLE CAN PROVIDE . I CAN ONLY MAKE THE CASE FOR WHT I SEE. 24 DEVELOPER AND COUNTING ARE DEVELOPING CONTENT FOR HOME. LET THE DEVELOPERS STRUGGLE FOR 5YR'S DEVELOPING AND THEN LET THEM SHOW THE GAMING WORLD WHT 5YR'S OF LEARNNING CAN BRING THE CONSUMERS WITH ANOTHER 5YR'S (10 YR'S ALTOGETHER) OF BETTER GAMES. (SRRY BAD ENDING) SONY PS2 WII PS3 GAMER HERE. 10 YR'S FOR $499.99 SOUND'S BETTER THAN 5YR'S OF $499.99. THE ARCAD VERSION OF THE 360 IS ONLY OUT SO SONY FAN'S WILL HAVE A CHEAPER REASON TO GET A 360. IM GOING TO GET THE REFIRBESHED VERSION FOR EVEN CHEAPER AND IT WON'T COUNT AS A SALE FOR MICROSOFT. ID RATHER 10 YR'S THAN 5
I couldn't be bothered to read the replies, but I bet the terms "TEH POWER OF TEH CELL!" and "TEH 10 YEAR PLAN!!!" were used. Sony fanboys are so suckered in by hype. looool.
I'm reading the same thing over and over again. I think most of you are stuck in your own little box and don't get out much. The "average" person is not going to download 5 gigs+ to watch an HD video, unrar, store and transfer it to their TV, or set up streaming. I could, you would, but thats pretty much it. Blu-ray is the only 1080P picture (which is on a different level than 720)with the highest quality sound (7.1!). Anyone willing to spend $2,000+ on an HDTV is typically willing to fork over the extra $300 for a blu-ray player. Downloading content is also techincally illegal. With that said, alot of people just aren't willing to do it. Netflix account, go for it. renting Blu-rays still drive netflix, blockbuster, etc. to purchase a wider variety of titles and still creates profits for sony. Xbox 360 has no future. PS3 is harder to develope games, you don't get better games with easier software. MSG4 wasn't a flop, but regardless of what you think it just shows us what we should expect for every game in the next 2 years. Lets list what PS3 has over 360. Bluetooth capabilty(endless options there) , Blu-ray player(worth the price of the system) , WIRELESS INTERNET(I don't know about you but I don't have hardline connections running through every room in my house, nor do I want them) That's "only" $99 for Xbox. I personally enjoy the in-game individual online setup for each game. Either way its free. Not a deal breaker. If Sony were to get rid of these "options" XBOX360 found useless. Sony Would be GIVING their consumers over $100 to taketheir system...(picture it, its hilarious) Sony won the HD war. Its not going anywhere. Think of it like this, if video games were not-existant tomorrow, sony would still be an internet browser, Blu-ray player, and pretty sweet media storage unit, What would the XBOX would only be a weak space heater. Anyone with an XBOX360 2 years from now when the ps3 is $200, you'll be the first ones in line purchasing it. The fact is PS3 hasn't even stretched it legs yet. Its as if Sony is letting MS stay in the market. Everything we talk about , Sony Knows. If Sony were to open up and just wipe the floor with 360 it would be the only real next-gen game console on the market.(wii is a child's toy). There is no argument for the 360, now or in the future. Bam. Your a believer!
GUY, 5 gig preinstalls?? Come-on. I've played atleast 25+ different games with 60 gig HDD, and I still have well oveer 40+ gigs left and a load of music. By the time I run out of HDD I'll be able to format the first 100 Games I don't play anymore.
