Microsoft surprises us again with news of something we already knew. As of yesterday Games or Windows LIVE has gone free, because it turns out that PC players don’t want to pay to play online. Where Xbox LIVE is acceptable as an online service because you are paying for a lot of high end service and items that are not standard as part of the console space, PC apparently has constant access to this internet service that’s all the rage…and there are servers coming out the wazoo.
Microsoft announced in a press release that everything on Games for Windows LIVE is now free. TruSkill matchmaking, cross-platform online play with the 360, voice and text chat, your friends list and all that jazz is now yours for the price of nothing. No word on whether Microsoft plans to reimburse those who currently have paid accounts. At the least I’d expect people to get a refund on the balance remaining.
It was also announced that the Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace will be coming this fall with free and paid downloadable content. You’ll pretty much get a similar experience as those of us on the 360 with game demos, trailers and nickel and dime crap you likely won’t need. And for those PC users confused by the console blade setup of GFW LIVE you’ll be getting a UI update that brings the system more in line to what PC gamers are used to seeing.
