Paramount Pictures has a knack for screwing up Star Trek. Granted, the current Trek franchise head honchos haven't exactly done wonders for the thing either, but Paramount was wreaking havoc with Roddenberry's dream long before Berman got his meaty paws on the good ship Enterprise.

To my mind, one of the greatest tragedies in Trekdom, is the hack and slash job done on Star Trek's shining cinematic achievement, The Wrath of Khan. I'm probably a little biased, but what Star Trek II wrought was without a doubt the greatest Trek film ever created, and to my mind, one of the finest Space Operas ever to float across the silver screen. Since its release, The Wrath of Khan (also known as The Vengence of Khan) has been subject to extreme revisionism. There have been so many different versions of the film released on television, on VHS, and even on DVD, that it has become difficult to really find the definitive, complete edition of Star Trek II. One version is missing this scene, another missing a different one. To date, there is NO single version of Star Trek II which contains EVERY scene that has ever aired as part of the movie. In fact, many scenes seem to have been lost or omitted altogether.

With the release of a Special Edition DVD in 2002, much of the confusion has been rectified, putting to use the special nature of DVD to include as much lost footage as possible. But still... not all. There's more out there, much more, and it's a true injustice that such a wonderful and well-known film should suffer this kind of pillaging.

With that in mind, The Film Hobbit presents an original promotional clip from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, courtesy of our friend Commander Todd. The footage is a bit grainy, but watch closely. Most of this footage hasn't been seen in decades, will not be found on any DVD, and isn't likely to be found anywhere else! Pick out the changes, and follow along on your copy of ST2 to figure out where Paramount has gone wrong.
