Local Band Army Navy Gets Big Slot

Local Band Army Navy Gets Big Slot Local bands are way more fun than big bands. They’re like you and me: they don’t always wear sunglasses, you bump into them at Guitar Center and Ralph’s (or Stop & Shop if you’re on the east coast), they send you personal invitations to their shows, and when they play, it usually isn’t for the 43rd time that month, so they’re up and into it.

But the best thing about local bands, in my humble (ok, less than humble) opinion, is watching them grow up to be big bands. My friends and I drooled to watch local Silverlake scenesters Silversun Pickups play live on Letterman, and I’m quietly stoked to hear local residents Low vs Diamond come on the radio during the day. So seeing a story about Silverlake band-next-door Army Navy headlining Club NME Wednesday in Los Angeles, as NME reported Wednesday, makes me get all giggly and misty like an Italian mother at graduation.

To tout, Army Navy is formed of the musical guile of Justin Kennedy, who used to co-front the Seattle band Pinwheel with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. Kennedy and his mates (Louie Schultz, Ben Gaffin, and Doug Randall) use their vintage instruments to collide the Smiths with the Pixies, Built to Spill and a bunch of Britpop hooligans, creating unbelievably persuasive, fuzz-coated melodies that cause feet to tap, and other reflexive motor-movements. One of their newer jigs, “My Thin Sides,” even breaks into clean-tone hyper-Brit territory, complete with an almost Libertines-esque solo by Louie.

I’d highly recommend checking them out at this or any other show, such as Monday at the Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles. (The latter may be the better option, since this story may not be up for a while.) I at least recommend hitting up their MySpace page. Good luck Googling them, though, as they’re not Wikipedia-status quite yet.
