When you make a movie about a crucial social issue with a big multi-national cast, you can end up in one of two ways. You can be Traffic or you can be Babel. You want to be Traffic, since that was a good movie rather than just an orgy of boring liberal guilt. Harrison Ford will do his part to make sure Wayne Kramer’s new movie, Crossing Over, is more Soderberg than not.
Despite the name, Crossing Over is not about that guy who pretends to speak to dead people in infomercials. Variety says it’s about the illegal alien situation. It will use intersecting storylines and a big cast, which includes Ford, Ray Liotta, and Sean Penn at this point. Ford will play an enforcement agent, Liotta a Customs and Immigration adjudicator, and Penn will have a cameo as a border patrol agent.
Kramer, who is writing and directing, previously directed The Cooler, which gave a starring role to William H. Macy and proved that Alec Baldwin is a good actor and not just a huge douche. Kramer previously wrote and directed a 35 minute short film called Crossing Over that this film will presumably be based on. Or else it’s a hell of a coinkidink. Ford hasn’t produced much lately that anyone would lable as “good” so, with this and Indiana Jones on the horizon, things are looking up. Which is good, since he’ll be dead soon.
