Mel Gibson Ditches Lethal Weapon 5

By Katey Rich: 2008-10-14 10:25:28
Mel Gibson Ditches Lethal Weapon 5 Even though Columbus Short thinks he'll have a supporting role in Lethal Weapon 5, a source even closer to the production says the whole thing is dead in the water. Richard Donner, who directed and produced the first four films, told the Los Angeles Times that Mel Gibson has turned down the movie, and without Mel, there will be no sequel.

""I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved," said Donner, who had been working on his own idea for a fifth movie but was not approached by the studio. And that's the grain of salt that all this information needs to be taken with-- of course the embittered director, jealous of producer Joel Silver for taking over his franchise, wants to dance on the grave of the fifth movie. Donner even goes on to say, ""Yes, the project is pretty much dead in the water unless someone had the sense to come to me." So the movie's entire fate rests on your shoulders? Really?

The article's writer, Geoff Boucher, called Gibson's rep's to confirm the story, and while they wouldn't say anything on the record, Boucher "left the conversation with no doubt in my mind that Donner's account is accurate." So take it for what you will-- either Columbus Short is in Lethal Weapon 5, or the embittered director of the first four movies is sparing us the likely trauma of a fifth.
