Pedro Almodovar is one of those foreign directors that film critics love to fawn over, but no one else really cares about. Whenever he makes something new, the press pawing begins. So far that hasn’t translated into any sort of real success, but at least Pedro must feel loved. It’s good to be accepted.
His next movie Volver opens soon, and I’m sure no one will see that too. It stars his fellow Spaniard and frequent collaborator Penelope Cruz, and once it’s done sweeping quietly through American arthouse theaters, The Hollywood Reporter says Cruz and Almodovar will team up for another. Almodovar’s next movie will be The Skin I Live In, and Penelope will be a part of the cast.
The good news if you’re one of those happy neophytes who's completely bored by or clueless about Almodovar, is that he says The Skin I Live In will be completely different from any of the movies he’s done before. It has nothing to do with anything in any of his previous 16 movies, instead he says this will be “a very tough story about revenge.”
Where will the walking, talking, glass drinking bird Penelope Cruz fit in? He’s not saying. She’ll be in the cast, but whether it’ll be a cameo or whether she’ll grab a Samurai sword and carve a path of bloody revenge through the film as its lead remains to be seen.
