Avatar Became The Biggest Movie Of All Time On Monday Titanic sank all over again on Monday as Avatar officially sailed past it to become the biggest movie in the world. While Avatar still has a shade more than $50 million to go before it passes Titanic’s domestic totals, add everything up worldwide and now Avatar is bigger.

Though final figures won’t be out until later Tuesday, Variety says Fox is confident that Monday, January 25th is the day Avatar passed Titanic’s 1.843 billion worldwide record. Only six weeks after it's debut, James Cameron's mostly animated epic rules the planet. Of course some might say that record comes with an asterisk.

In spite of Avatar’s superior sales, considerably more tickets were likely sold for Titanic. Because Avatar was shown in 3D many places, that means more money was charged for Avatar tickets than for any other movie before. In some cases an Avatar ticket might cost as much as twice the price of a normal movie ticket, making it a lot easier to put up those massive box office totals. And that doesn’t even take into account inflation.

Still, it’s a significant moment. Few thought Titanic’s record would ever be broken under any circumstances. The next runner up, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, is a very distant third with only 1.1 billion earned worldwide. It took a bag full of 3D glasses and a ridiculous budget for James Cameron to top himself. Can he do it again? Of course he can. He’s James Cameron.
