Well, we all knew it would happen, but I'm not sure anyone saw it coming this fast. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Avatar is now the #2 movie in history, having passed The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King at the worldwide box office.
Now, of course, there's only one record left standing-- James Cameron's own Titanic. There's no telling whether or not Avatar can beat Titanic's record $1.8 billion worldwide gross, but given that all estimates about this movie's success have been too low, I wouldn't rule it out. As of today Avatar's domestic gross will be $374,436,685-- the next domestic record to beat is Return of the King as well, at $377,027,325. That will happen by this weekend. The sky is the limit.
