David O. Russell is finally free from the albatross of Nailed, the political satire he spent years trying to finished before finally being cut loose by the financiers as they squabbled over money issues and producer salaries. In the meantime he managed to make The Fighter, the boxing drama starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, and now according to Deadline he's jumping right into the next project.
Russell and Vince Vaughn are planning to team up on Old St. Louis, an apparent drama about a traveling salesman forced to reconnect with his young daughter, who might be played by Hit Girl herself, Chloe Moretz. They're hoping to put the whole thing together at Universal, and while nothing is certain yet, Deadline seems pretty confident about it.
The whole premise sounds dangerously sentimental, and also like the idea behind Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, but Russell and Vaughn are an intriguing combination. It's been so long since I Heart Huckabees and such a disastrous process with Nailed that I have to imagine Russell has a lot he wants to get out there by now, and who better to do it with than motormouthed Vaughn?
