Not that I would ever endorse jealousy or any other bad feelings on the set of The Office, but it’s a wonder that Ed Helms’ co-stars don’t hate him by now. The guy is so consistently funny, and has been ever since his character joined the show in season 3, that just thinking about his botched proposal to Angela or flying trip out of a golf cart makes me laugh out loud.
Now those of us in need of an Office fix at all times can rejoice, since Helms is joining the cast of two upcoming movies. Both seem likely to use his comedic talents, despite one being a small indie comedy and the other being an anticipated sequel to a major blockbuster. That’s just how wide-ranging Ed’s talents are!
Variety reports that the first one up will be Manure, starring Helms, Billy Bob Thornton and Kyle MacLachlan as manure peddlers in 1960s America. Tea Leoni also stars, but really, she’s probably a side note to the amazing trio of men in the leads. Brothers Mark and Michael Polish, who also wrote The Astronaut Farmer, wrote the screenplay.
Then we’ll see Helms later this year in Night at the Museum 2: Escape from the Smithsonian, though it’s a little disappointing he won’t be playing one of the historical figures come to life. Instead, he’ll be a fellow security guard who is friends with Ben Stiller’s character.
But hey: More Ed Helms is always a good thing! And even if Andy Bernard wouldn’t know a single thing about selling manure, both of these roles will make me think fondly of my favorite a capella-singing employee.
