Director Kevin Macdonald is working on a new movie called State of Play and there must be something really awful about it, because he can’t seem to get anyone to stick with it. The movie’s already been massively delayed by Brad Pitt, who signed to do it and then held off on working on it for awhile, until he finally dropped the thing altogether and headed for the hills. Now Variety says Edward Norton is pulling the same bit.
Edward Norton is out of the movie, perhaps disenchanted by the departure of Brad which means an end to all our fantasies of a Fight Club reunion. Variety says it’s something much less interesting though, something about scheduling conflicts. Makes sense, after how long this movie has been on the merry-go-round.
Like Pitt, Norton has already been replaced. Russell Crowe took over for Brad Pitt and now Ben Affleck is stepping in to take over for Norton. Ben will play a congressman who finds his political life threatened by an investigation into the death of his mistress. A journalist and former campaign manager played potentially by Crowe, starts investigating and develops a relationship with the politician’s estranged wife.
As much as I like Ben Affleck, he’s definitely a step down from Ed Norton when it comes to acting chops. Actually, after the great job he did directing Gone Baby Gone earlier this year, I was kind of hoping he’d just give up the acting thing and say behind the camera. The guy’s an occasionally decent actor, but he really has something as a director, and would probably be best served by putting all his energy there. Besides, Bennifer may be years behind him, but that doesn’t make the world any less sick of seeing him. Affleck, fair or not, is still kind of a punchline.
