Gekko To Make Another Takeover Bid

Gekko To Make Another Takeover Bid There are certain film characters that take on a life outside of their original movie. They tap into viewers' imaginations allowing them to become more than just temporarily relevant. From Jeff Spicoli to The Dude to groundskeeper Carl Spackler, these lovable caricatures are instantly recognizable and permanently endearing. Possibly the most striking example from the decade of excess is Gordon Gekko. In fact, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t at least vaguely remember the greedy stock broker (except my spell check).

1987’s Wall Street did for money what Scarface did for cocaine. It was about wild excesses, staggering highs, and life-altering lows. It’s kind of like the book “Prozac Nation” but with much larger stakes and less whiny girl drama. It now appears 20th Century Fox may resurrect the twenty year old executive for a sequel. According to The New York Times, an aged Michael Douglas will reprise his powerful persona in the upcoming Money Never Sleeps.

Not much is known about the script or general plot lines, but one thing is definitely clear: Gekko will not have learned his lesson. Like any forward thinking criminal, the money mogul spent his incarceration period brooding over Bud Fox’s backstab rather than rehabilitating. And why shouldn’t he? I realize he kind of screwed over Charlie Sheen’s character with attempting to disband and sell off his father’s company, but that didn’t give Fox the right to do his best Rosenberg impression! Damn Narc!

Early indications are that neither Bud Fox nor director Oliver Stone will be back. This is a little bit disheartening, but I’m pretty sure Michael Douglas would not return without an A level script. Expect lots of dollar-driven morals, lessons, and principals, beautiful gold diggers, and another forced view in your high school economics class.
