Hugh Jackman Rides Carousel

By Josh Tyler: 2006-08-02 00:00:00
Hugh Jackman Rides Carousel Fox 2000 is indulging Hugh Jackman’s tippy-toe fantasies by planning to remake the movie musical Carousel as a star vehicle for him. Variety says Hugh is on board and even producing, in conjunction with his Seed Productions partner John Palermo.

The original film was released in 1956 and starred Shirley Jones and Gordon McRae in the story of a carnival barker whose bad temper lands him in the middle of a botched robbery and leads to his death. He ends up in Purgatory, and gets one day to go back to the living world and fix whatever issues he left behind, in particular a rebellious teenager. It’s kind of like Heaven Can Wait, without the animal component.

Hugh will play the carnival barker, a guy named Billy Bigalow. He’s actually played the part before, he sang the role in a 2002 Carnegie Hall performance.

It’s great that Hugh Jackman is so multi-talented, but did anyone else notice that his affinity for swishy roles is starting to affect his performance as Wolverine? I’d swear that in X-Men 3 he was ready to break out into a little song and dance number at any moment. What happened to the indifferent, feral berserker? Let’s hope his latest musical foray doesn’t screw up his Wolverine spin-off. It’s still slated to happen, but can Hugh get back to playing that gruff, tough character after spending so much time dancing his way across the screen in some sort of strange, mutated impression of Bing Crosby? Luck for him, at least half of his fans are women.

You’ll be seeing a lot of Hugh Jackman through the rest of this year. This fall he shows up in Christopher Nolan’s next movie The Prestige and then in Darren Aronofsky’s long longed for epic The Fountain.

HUGH IS SOOOO MULTI-TALENTED THAT HE WILL BE ABLE TO PULL IT OF WONDERFULLY!!!

  1. Em Says:

Hugh is absolutely wonderful, in every way. of course he'll be able to do it. and he'll still be great as wolverine.

  1. Ane Hedley Says:

Hugh Jackman is the most talented actor we have today and with films like The Prestige and particularly The Fountain he will make a big mark on the silver screen and better scripts will follow. But he's wonderful to watch, and listen to when he is a musical. I saw Oklahoma and I was spellbound. When he starts singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' there will not be a dry eye in the the cinema - it would be awesome.

He moves so easily from the stage to the silver screen in whatever roles he is required to do because of his great talent

I think all the straight guys out there need to get over the idea that a "real" man has to bite ears off and crap in the backyard, and never ever be able to dance or sing. Yep, there are straight guys out there who are comfortable being who they are and don't have anything to prove. Try it. You might like the freedom. I love that some poor sod yelled out from the "Boy From Oz" audience in NYC, as Hugh/Peter kissed another guy: "Don't do it, Wolverine!" Hugh laughed so hard he could hardly hide it.

"Tippy-toe?" Mr. Tyler, I don't know what production of CAROUSEL you're referring to -- it must be in some alternate universe where Billy Bigelow dances. Newsflash to the musically uninformed: He doesn't. That's be too "sissy" for a rough-and-tumbler like Billy. Your reference to "a guy named Billy Bigalow [sic]" indicates you're not exactly doing a dissertation on Rodgers & Hammerstein. Bigelow is one of the iconic characters of classic musical theatre. Methinks your enjoyment of Hugh's masterful portrayal of Wolvie has been besmirched by the power of suggestion. In no way, shape, or form does the perpetually pissed-off bruiser ever seem on the verge of kicking up his heels. Oh, and Bing Crosby was not known for his fancy footwork: crooning, yes. But not way dancing. Did someone spike your Gatorade?

I think some of the confusion regarding Hugh arises from the fact that we haven't seen someone as multitalented as he in decades. His consummate skills in all areas--dramatic acting, comedic acting, action sequences, singing, dancing, you name it--defies stereotyping. And that undermines people's rock-of-Gibraltar surety and preconceived notions. Hugh is going to emerge as the biggest male star in many a moon, and I am very much looking forward to seeing everything he does, whether on stage (where I saw his BOY FROM OZ 20 times) or screen.

Dear Ellen: I think you may be taking yourself too seriously.

    No, I'm sure of it.

PS - See White Christmas for a great Bing Crosby dance number with the equally great Danny Kay.

Give the lady a cigar! We've gotten so comfortable stereotyping entertainers that Jackman's versatility just boggles the mind. And it goes beyond his incredible talent; no one has anything bad to say about this guy -- everyone who works with him praises him to the skies. He's refreshingly honesty -- doesn't mind playing the fool and can laugh at himself. His humility and sincerity make other celebrities look like the big selfish, self-indulgent babies they really are.

I think it's partly his personality and partly that he came to his huge success relatively late in life as a very centered person. I agree that this is the entertainer nonpareil for our times, the cavemen in the audience notwithstanding.
