Is Dakota Fanning's New Movie Kiddie Porn?

By Josh Tyler: 2007-01-24 04:38:47
Is Dakota Fanning's New Movie Kiddie Porn? There’s been an incredible amount of controversy swirling around Dakota Fanning’s next film, Hounddog. I know Dakota Fanning and controversy aren’t words you usually hear together, but when she’s in a movie about child rape people tend to sit up and take notice.

Early reports which we brought you here indicated that the role she was being asked to undertake would involve some things that can only be considered truly horrific for a still pre-teen girl. Originally, the script was rumored to call for Fanning’s character “to be raped in one explicit scene and to appear naked or clad only in underpants.” That single sentence launched a firestorm of outrage, and rightly so. Acting or not, putting a kid in that situation is questionable at best and flat out satanic evil at worst.

Since running that story, Hounddog has become one of the most hotly debated films on Cinema Blend. Our comments section on that story is still blazing away with a mix of creepy possible pedophiles and shocked parents outraged that her parents would allow her to do this. Honestly, half the people we’ve had commenting on it flat out ought to be in prison, which only makes the whole thing a little more disgusting. There are actually people out there slavering to see Dakota Fanning naked. Not just one or two, but a lot of them. It’s sick.

Happily, it’s starting to sound like those early reports of Dakota Fanning being stripped nude and raped for Oscar gold may have been somewhat exaggerated. Hounddog is currently screening at the Sundance Film Festival, and early reports from critics who have seen the film indicate the contested rape scene has been greatly minimized.

AICN for instance has a review from a scooper who says, “Although that scene would be repulsive due to its subject matter alone, it is handled as tastefully as possible: the camera focuses on Fanning's face, hands, and feet, and the scene does not linger exploitatively. It is as brief as it could be while still getting its impact across.” To me, that sounds a lot more acceptable than early descriptions of what she was being asked to do.

To further ease all of our minds, the Richard over at Filmstalker claims that from what he’s been able to dig up, “she was probably just asked to pretend she was being held down and she was fighting against someone holding her.” He adds, “She had her clothes on and there was no one around her except for the usual behind the scenes crew, according to those on set there is no other actor with her in that scene, she's on her own.”

So look, controversy over right? There’s nothing sick going on here. Move along. Dakota Fanning does not need protected, right? The Catholic League disagrees. Variety says they’re calling for it to be investigated as child pornography. They claim that even though Dakota says she wanted to do it, a 12-year-old is not qualified to make those kinds of decisions. “The process by which the child actor or actress gets to do this ... it's not like a kid wants a minibike or karate lessons. A lot of weight is being put on this child,” says one child protection consultant.

Except it’s really starting to sound like she didn’t’ do anything. So what’s with all the saber rattling? But they’re asking, “Who's looking out for this kid? My question would be, 'What do you need my client in this scene for? You can't find an arm or a leg in Hollywood?'”

Look, when this story first broke, long before anyone saw the film, I was as outraged as anyone. It sounded sick, twisted, and really really wrong. But those original reports were clearly exaggerated and from what people who have actually seen the film are saying, it doesn’t sound like there was anything morally unacceptable going on. Dakota’s mother let her do it, she didn’t do anything too outside the realm of acceptability for a 12-year-old, so why are we still talking about this? Time to drop it folks.

  • I guess tt every one forgets about Bastad out of Carolina. The girl in that gets raped a bt up and now it is a Lifetime movie of the week. What about Jodie Foster in the Taxi Driver? She was a Pre-teen and played a hooker. I feel that every one is wrong about this,I think Dakota Fanning is trying to break away from the cute movies. She was great in Hide and Seek. Then let's not forget the Piano. There are so may movies that I can list that has childnudity in them that have been released in the last five years
  • Why is this movie such a big deal to the one that don't understand the facts that the industry is trying to put out there for the world to see?? There's plenty of movies that have shown children been raped, abused and misused in the world; and I feel like these things and upsetting people because they don't want to know the truth about the world with live in........some of us like to live in an optimistic world were nothing happen and people are given the benefit of the doubt......well, our world isn't that and these things that are depicted in the films and others like it shows the reality that's there.......People are hurt, scarred, and scared to tell their stories of abuse and now you have so many things coming out because what others have told in their stories and we have these stories inspiring movies, because these things do happen in this world......Please on your eyes and realize this.......don't think by banning or postponing Dakota's movies others won't be made in the making........and another question why are you consider just for her???? Is it all in a name??? Like another person posted and it was definitely true.......what about the actress that played in " A TIME TO KILL"..............THAT MOVIE BROUGHT ME TO MY KNEES, NOT JUST BECAUSE THE MOVIE DEALT WITH RACIAL ISSUES, BUT THE FACT THAT THOSE MEN COULD DO THAT TO A YOUNG CHILD AND TAKE THAT SENSE OF INNOCENCE AWAY, THAT GIRL WAS SCARRED AND REALLY THINK ABOUT THE LONG TERM MENTAL EFFECT THAT HAS ON A PERSON......There's other movies out there like that like : "The Girl Next Door" where the girl was abused in a basement for weeks to months........."Trade" with Kelvin Kline and "Human Trafficking".......these movies show how people are abused and exploited in the world we live in.....yes, our world!!! So, don't use this little girl just to make yourself feel better and hide behind your optimistc outlook on the world because whether you know whether the movie goes on or not life does and others are still being ABUSED, RAPED, EXPLOITED, KILLED, AND VIOLATED.
  • First of all let me say this, America needs to stop getting upset and making a big deal out of every little thing that involves a child. Children are smarter and more mature than you think and not as innocent as you think they are. My kids where telling me that kids are having sex at school and at skating rinks and they are between the ages of 8-12. I know it is hard for you all to believe but your little girls are probably having more sex than you. There has been tons of movies out there with child nudity in them. What about pretty baby? You can still go to any block buster video store and rent out a copy. What about all those nudist beaches? There are naked kids running around all over the place. Why dont anyone complain about that? A pedophile dont have to see here naked to get off. What are you going to do next say that our kids cant go to the swimming pools with swim suits on? When you think about it a swim suit is nothing but bra and panties and you let your little girls run around bending over at beaches and swimming pools.Think about it. Say what you want but you know I just made alot of since. Stop lieing to your selves. Wake up and stop living in a dream world!
  • I don't see what the big deal is. if the girl wanna be naked then let her be a little kid and get naked. I'm not saying i wanna see her nude but hell she is a kid. thats what they do.
  • There is definitely NO pornography in Hounddog. That still doesn't mean she should have done the role morally, but when Catholics and Christians are saying THESE things, they lose all credibility of authority! Get the information right!
  • ...the producers of "Hounddog" are practically giddy at the thought of the Catholic dude and his fellows boycotting this film. Can you say, "Free PR for a movie that on one would have seen otherwise?" By the way, there is no way in God's green Earth that Fanning's parents should have let her near this movie, much less the script. Twelve year old girls should be told and educated about rape, but they shouldn't be ASKED to fake it for "art". Fanning may be the most mature 12-year old in the known universe, but she's still 12, covered in braces, and when you still use words such as "like" in a sentence ("Like, I was doing it for art; like, you know what I mean? Like, yeah." etc) you shouldn't be allowed to make a decision that can potentially scar you for life. Can you say, "Parental Abuse?"
  • John, thank you for your polite comment.

    Sarcasm indicated.

Point 1: I never said anyone will see her naked in the movie. Perhaps you should read the thing again. I said she will NOT be naked in the movie. The quote you pulled says that sickos WANT to see her naked, not that they will.

Point 2: Try reading the sentence before "The Catholic League disagrees" to understand what it is I'm saying they disagree with. Context sir. Context.
  • "There are actually people out there slavering to see Dakota Fanning naked. Not just one or two, but a lot of them. It’s sick."

Josh you are an idiot. No one will see Dakota nude in this movie. You should get your facts straight before posting crap like this.

    "The Catholic League disagrees?"

What don't they disagree with? Google them and look at all the movies, books, music, stores, and businesses they have boycotted, petitioned, and tried to get some kind of federal investigation against. These people are a joke looking for publicity. Maybe to take some of the attention away from the Catholic priest scandal. You know there are over 4000 priest that have been accused of molesting over 10,000 minors. Maybe they should deal with their own problems before attacking others.
  • I went to the premiere of Hounddog at Sundance and stood in the "wait list" line forever. I didn't get tickets but the security there was so tight that it caught my attention.

I've been going to Sundance for four years now and while security is pretty loose, no one and I mean no one was allowed to stand out of line anywhere near the building. Usually you can stand in a spot if you want to watch teh stars go into the premiere but with this film it was forbidden. I asked one of the security guys why this was and he gave me this look of "don't go there." So I asked if there have been credible threats made and he nodded his head yes. Before he ushered us to the wait list line I asked if the threats were against Dakota Fanning or the film itself and he replied with a very stern tone and said, "Both."

    Just thought I'd report it.

  • And what about Pretty Baby? There was controversy then, but is our society or the film industry any worse off because of it?
  • I want to know why nobody made any noise about the horrific and fairly explicit child rape seen in the movie "A Time To Kill"? There was no League of Extrodinary Catholics out to fight for her!
  • William Donohue of the Catholic League is a hypocrite. Back on Monday he said in an interview on CNN that if it was not Dakota Fanning in Hounddog, but rather some 12-year old actress who nobody had ever heard of, he wouldn't have even bothered with the issue. Donohue is the one exploting Dakota by using her popularity and success as an actress to push his ideologue agenda. What a fraud.
  • I have been a fan of Dakota Fanning since the Sci-Fi Channel's superb "Taken" miniseries a few years ago. The kid is just a great, great actress.

Look, Bill Donahue and the rest of those Catholic League fools really need to learn what qualifies as pornographic. Furthermore, Donahue should be well aware, if he truly is a Catholic, that rape is seldom about the sexuality and even more rarely viewed for pornographic means. Rape is quite simply violence, and it is reprehensible. The producers of this movie, however, are not at all charged with making rape seem okay. Rather, they are depicting an abused, pre-teenage girl who is the victim of a horrible, sick, and twisted human being.

To all you bastions of morality out there: should we pretend that little girls are never raped, or should we depict it as tastefully as a disgusting act like rape can be, showing that there are physical, emotional, and psychological effects that last long after the act itself?
