Chloe Sevigny and Zooey Deschanel are set to star in a comedy which has a title that makes it sound like it ought to star Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn. When your wife forces you to take her to see it, she’ll tell you it’s called Divorce Ranch, and you’ll go because last night she let you watch Terminator on TBS. Fair is fair.
It’s written and directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who in the past has made TV programs about Nazi hunting and the Rolling Stones. Clearly this is some sort of penance he’s been force to pay by the National Association for the Advancement Of Estrogen on Film. They exist, I’m certain of it. It’s the only way to explain all those Oscar nominations for Atonement.
Variety says Divorce Ranch is actually nothing like a Diane Keaton movie, at least not any of her crummy recent ones. Instead, it’s a period piece set in Nevada just after WWII. Apparently after the war Nevada went into the business of granting quickie divorces for people who lived there. So, someone came up with the bright idea of setting up a divorce ranch where out of staters could come and live until they established enough residency to dump their unwanted other. Chloe Sevigny plays an actress who comes with her 6-year-old son to the ranch. Not so she can divorce her kid (I don’t think it works that way), but so she can cut ties and marry a wealthy man. Zooey plays her assistant. You’d think if she can afford an assistant she wouldn’t need a wealthy man, but maybe assistants came cheaper back then.
