Jason Reitman Writing Another Satire
I’m not sure why Jason Reitman is giving interviews right now. He’s producing Jennifer’s Body but that’s still filming. He’s planning to direct Jim Carrey in Pierre, Pierre but that hasn’t started production yet. And he just got done with the fearsome Juno publicity machine, which seemingly had him talking to a journalist every day for six months while trying to come up with new adjectives to praise Diablo Cody and Ellen Page. He was always a good sport about it, though, which we can all appreciate.
But anyway, Reitman sat down with MTV Movies and revealed that he’s not just getting ready to direct again, but he’s writing a script too. “I’m going to direct it at the end of the year. And no, I haven’t told anyone what it is yet.” But those magicians at MTV eventually got him to spill the beans. “It’s a comedy and a drama [book adaptation],” he revealed. “Think Thank You for Smoking, but instead of political it’s corporate.”
A book adaptation, huh? That makes it a lot easier to guess what he’s up to, actually. What book is a satire about corporate life, like Thank You For Smoking was about politics, and is hip enough to deserve Jason Reitman’s directorial touch? My best guess is And Then We Came To An End, a novel about life at an advertising agency that came out last year. It made a big splash, it’s supposedly funny, and it sounds right up Reitman’s alley.
But then again, I have no idea what I’m talking about. What do you guys think the book will be? And what do you want to see Reitman adapt? I’m just thrilled that he’ll be writing a screenplay again, since Thank You For Smoking was hilarious in a way few movies ever are. And with that Oscar nomination under his belt, Reitman will probably be bringing us that kind of comedy for a long, long time.
