The Reader is a movie that’s likely to be talked about a lot come Oscar season this fall, but it’s flying under the radar for now. For one thing, its star, Kate Winslet, will be starring in another high-profile period picture, Revolutionary Road, with Leonardo DiCaprio thrown in to boot. And for another, the movie is still filming, which means there are no trailers or even promotional posters out there to get us excited. And, well, it’s not exactly The Incredible Hulk, and won’t get the same marketing push as a summer blockbuster.But the movie probably got some unintentional publicity thanks to paparazzi photos from the set, which show the luminous, glorious, beautiful Kate Winslet dolled up—as an old lady. She may not have gotten to play the old version of herself in Titanic, but in The Reader, Winslet plays concentration camp guard Hanna Schmitz both at a younger age and older, when she is put on trial for war crimes. JustJared has the set photos, which show not only Winslet’s makeup and wig, but what is presumably a bodysuit to give her the body of an aged woman as well. Hilariously, the arms are a dead giveaway in one shot, seen above—either we won’t be seeing her arms in the particular shot she’s prepared for, or Hanna Schmitz’s arms were remarkably well-preserved. There’s something automatically appealing—not to mention Oscar-worthy—about an actor playing older, especially one as transcendentally beautiful as Winslet. So while these photos maybe aren’t as effective as a teaser trailer or some early merchandising, they might be the best publicity The Reader could ask for.
