Nolan And Goyer Talk Dark Knight Sequel Villains

By Josh Tyler: 2008-07-14 01:28:16
Nolan And Goyer Talk Dark Knight Sequel Villains Anyone who doesn’t think The Dark Knight is about to become the biggest box office hit of 2008, is probably in my Fantasy Moguls Box Office league and couldn’t afford to purchase The Dark Knight for their studio. I am one of those people. Hey, I wanted The Pineapple Express, ok? But fantasy competition aside, this thing is going to be huge, and that means a sequel of some sort is already all but guaranteed.

Recently writers Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer sat down with the guys over at Movieonline, where they talked a little about who they’d like to use for Batman 3, when the inevitable becomes reality. They seem determined to do something unpredictable. Goyer says, “We’re not going to tell you other than to say Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie we used Ra’s Al Ghul and the Scarecrow who had not been in the movies before and had not been in the 60s TV show and there are dozens, if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says you have to use the Penguin or Catwoman. Well, I completely disagree.”

I see what he’s saying, it makes sense. They’ve already been done, and in the case of Catwoman and Penguin I think done pretty well. Batman has a huge rogues gallery, the best bunch of villains in any comic book character’s history. Why not explore some of those? I’d love to see Clayface for instance. Or maybe Nolan could finally do Mr. Freeze properly, so we can all forget about the horrible things Arnold Schwarzenegger did to them. It’s nice to hear anyway, that they’re considering new pathways, even though they’ve gone back to the Joker for this particular film.

  1. Ryan Says:

I don't get all the discussion about the villains for Batman 3. Two-Face is the villain for Batman 3, isn't that pretty obvious? Maybe someone like The Riddler could be introduced or maybe be a supporting villain, but other than that, I don't think a whole lot of other people are gonna be in it.

  1. TC Stark Says:

How is twoface gonna be the villian int he third one if Harvey Dent was killed at the end of Dark Knight?

  1. Bruce Wayne Says:

Harvey Dent/ Two face was pwnd at the end so it cant be him. fell to his death.

  1. Why So Serious Says:

what happend to the joker? he is still the bad boy on the streets.....hes not gonna disapear because heath leadger passed away

  1. Batman Says:

Yes, he will. They won't bring him back out of respect for Heath and his brilliant performance. And they'll want to try another villain.

  1. Jocelyn Says:

Oh I think that would be ridiculously disrespectful if they got ANOTHER person to play the joker. I think at this point they should just leave it be that he was apprehended and sent to an asylum out of the city.

Dent was "killed", but what does that really mean in movies? Riddler is being talked about as the 3rd film villain, played by David Tennant. which I think is perfect. Hopefully we can forget about the spandex suit though. Theres no reason to do that to millions of movie goers.

  1. Batfiend Says:

Well, honestly, Nolan has done a good job so far of making the BEST Joker ever with Heath Ledger. So what if he could use both a better version of Bane and the Riddler? I figure that the Riddler could present a powerful challenge to the Batman with his intellectual puzzle, and the immense threat of his encrypted crime could draw the now outcast Dark Knight. I agree that we could have a much better version than Jim Carrey. As for Bane, he could simply be a drug cartel guy gone bad with the super-steroid stuff that he takes, and be the morbid, enraged, Bane that laid the beatdown on Batman in the comic, broken Bat. As for now, the joker's main defeat, and Two-Face's killing spree, would mean some time for Bruce Wayne to get his new house, plus his new Batcave, in order. Also, why not give him the Batplane from Wayne Enterprises using a modified Stealth Bomber design with Harrier Jet landing capabilities, an airborne dogfight over Gotham would make for a good scene, and a great final triumph for the Batman.

  1. Andrew Says:

I'd love to see Firefly, Killer Moth, Mad Hatter, and The Ventriloquist.

  1. Ulrich Says:

Harlequin for me...Heath's performance was awesome!

  1. Nick Says:

I think that perhaps in the beginning of the third they could kill off the joker... I mean they have to clear up that loose end somehow. Bringing in a new joker (as said before) would be in very bad taste, but removing him from the series with a cool twist might be cool. One problem that I foresee in this though is that Heath created such an amazingly unique and complex character that it would require something equally as unique to remove him.

  1. Mr. E Says:

Didnt anyone notice that Anthony Michael Hall played a Mr Edward Nygma? E Nygma? Riddler for those not so quick on the uptake... As much as I loved this movie and Ledgers brilliant portrayal of The Joker, I think it would be a waste of Nolans talent to simply re-do all the characters that were ruined in the 90's pathetic versions such as freeze etc - start fresh, the Scarecrow in BB proved new villains can be done and be done well

  1. The Movieman Says:

    Riddler...but somewhat reimagined.

Joker = anarchist who created chaos and savored the power of fear for his own sadistic self-fulfillment.

Riddler = Intellectual elitist who becomes disillusioned with politics & current Gotham political climate birthed from Dent’s hyped mythos upon uncovering the true Dent mythos that he devolves into a revolutionary political radical. Believes the Joker squandered his power on hedonism instead of exacting forced political change.

Nigma originally likes the order that has returned to Gotham as he is ingrained with an obsessive-compulsive personality. He welcomes the structure, but because Enigma bought the original Dent mythos hook, line and sinker, he devolves as his obsessive compulsive nature compels him to spread the truth. However, since it has been several years since Dent's death, the Dent mythos has become ingrained in the people of Gotham's collective conscious. Nigma is marginalized as the people are ambivalent towards him and his theories, which further exacerbates his fervor for solving the ultimate Puzzle--the answer to which will provide the catalyst for his revolution (so he believes.) Thus, his compulsion causes him to descend into a mad obsession with the Question the Joker so selfishly (in Nigma’s mind) left unanswered: Who is the Batman?

Nigma ascends from a petty nuisance obsessed with crime scenes and crime solving as a hobby to a greater and greater threat as he seeks to truly unravel the mystery of Batman. Just as Wayne feels he will be able to leave Batman behind for good since Dent's mythos has inspired and created renewal in Gotham over the last seven years (which was Wayne’s original intent with the symbol Batman), a new kind of cerebral challenger has instigated a chess match with Batman/Wayne where each move could be Checkmate. While Nigma's ego makes him disdainful of the ill stewardship the Joker showed with the power he created through chaos and fear, he is a fan of the Joker's Charisma, Style and presentation, hence the somewhat similar fashion style. While Joker wanted Anarchy and instability, the Riddler will want Political Revolution and forced social re-engineering so that the rightful power to govern as necessary will rest with the only ones he believes can be trusted to know how to use it properly, the intellectual elite, rather than the uneducated and easily misled/distracted masses.

  1. Gideon Says:

I think that for the third movie the villain should be either Killer Moth or Prometheus, as both are billed as the anti-Batman, which would make for some great screen action. Either character could be shown aquiring the weaponry and equipment in the same plausable way as Batman in the first two movies.

  1. Alex Says:

Actually Anthony Michael Hall plays Mike Engel not E Nygma.

    See Wikipedia

  1. bateman Says:

i think johnny depp could play the joker, and dent isnt dead, eckhart has already signed a contract to be in another batman film, so maybe another 2 face riddler combination

  1. betterman Says:

two face isn't dead, batman has never killed anyone and two-face hasn't received a chance to live up to the hype yet. two-face riddler for third film

  1. chris Says:

How do you know Eckhart signed on for another film? Wheres the link?

  1. KLimer Says:

I think it would be a good set up for his side kick(Robin). I mean think about it Batman name is tainted , So Bruce is going to be Bruce full-time. Completely turning a blind eye to what is going on for the purpose of keeping his word to gordon . But when he attends a charity circus performance he sees a young Dick Grayson witnessing the death of his parents just as young Bruce once did. While everybody thinks it is an accident Bruce and Gordon he the young boy murmur that he seen a man who was not supposed to be in the circus both before the perfomance and a few days earlier while trying to extract money from the circuis and was refused. This makes Bruce realize had he not put down his cape and cowl this would have been prevented and another young boy would not have suffered the same tragedy as he did.

  1. KLimer Says:

Oh yeah without introducing Robin just yet instead just focus about Batman finding his parents killer and him adopting the boy. While the city goes thru mayhem.

  1. MSUSteve Says:

I just assumed that Dent was actually dead and would not be returning. He sure looked dead when Batman and Commissioner Gordon were standing over him. I suppose it's possible they secreted Dent away to some hidden location, but I really didn't get the impression they were reserving Two Face as a legitimate future villain. If Eckhart truly is signed on for another Batman film, perhaps its to reprise his role as Dent in flashbacks or something to that effect.

  1. wayne bruce Says:

i thought johnny depp would make a good riddler too

  1. Dammit Heath, Why Did You Take So Many Sleep-Aids? Says:

I don't think Dent died. As said earlier, The Batman can't kill anyone. I don't think it would be a bad thing if they brought Joker back (not in 3, in a later film) but they would need an actor that could at least replicate Heath's character or one of equal quality. That would be difficult, and difficult is a severe understatement, but if they can do it I say go for it.
Depp is a good actor but I don't think he would suit Joker like Heath did. Heath didn't suit the Joker character, he disappeared into it. It was the Joker acting in that masterpiece of a movie, a Joker hiding Heath Ledger inside him.

    Riddler...but somewhat re-imagined.

    No. Completely re-imagined ; )
I think he should be a severe over-thinker, but always in possession of intelligence of epic proportions. He should over think things until they don't make sense to even him anymore, driving him into highly educated and intelligent insanity.

I don't like how the discovery of Robin was suggested here. I think if they want to include Robin they need to re-invent him completely. Even the circus part. He's too corny for me, even with the lust for revenge on Two-Face and the Batman-esque Bird Suit. He needs to be a hell of a lot darker.

However I do like the idea of Batman hanging up the suit for a while, and noticing the similarities between his past and Robin's situation, realizing that he could have prevented this had he still been dressing up like a flying rodent at "knight".

It is going to be REALLY hard to follow a villain performance as perfect as Heath's Joker.

However they do it, I am eagerly awaiting the next Caped Crusader film. I can only hope that they manage something as iconic as The Dark Knight. The sooner the better, but if waiting longer means a better performance then I am ready to wait.

  1. Rafael Benitez Says:

I dont think this director will bring Robin to the picture...You cant take 2 dark batman movies and add a sidekick which lightens up the picture.

I think the riddler would be a great villian becouse he could be betrayed"DARK".

I dont know if hiring an A list actor like Johnny deep or Jim carey would fit the bill.. They should transform the character .. make Nestor Carbonell who played the mayor into the riddler.. he is young and i think he would fit the bill.. or even the guy that knows who batman is.. you know the one everyone wanted to kill in 60 seconds,,,

i would love to see catwomen or the penguin..but those two villians where portrayed PERFECTLY in theire batman movie.. unlike Mr. Freeze

also Poison Ivy could be a villian in number 3 ..her and riddler would be great..
The Ventriloquist woul also be great.. he could be portrayed dark and bring up Bruce parents in away

AND pleas NO killer moth or any flying dude .. this isnt Marvel ..its D.C. lets be real

  1. Zach Trusty Says:

    They could bring in superman
    or
hush and the riddler that would be awesome since there is a story already out with hush and the riddler facing batman

  1. Nittros Says:

I think that the next batman movie should be set a few years after this, with joker having died somehow after batman confronted him for killing jason todd. in the sequel we could bring in nightwing as a separate vigilante like batman. they could put bane and riddler as the villains, though these new nolan batman flicks could loose how "real" they have been...

  1. KLimer Says:

When I meant Robin I didn't the domino wearing mask and cape bird boy. I meant when he was just a kid. People think Robin is corny so did I , Because evreyone is in bad taste after the whole Batman Forever and Batman and Robin fiasco. Untill I saw the Batman animated series episode Robin's Reconing which it was not Two Face that killed Robin's parents. It was a mob enforcer Tony Zucco that was trying to make a name for himself. by trying to extort money from the circus the the Graysons worked. I think timing would be good , since Bruce was young himself when he adopted Dick and Gordon was still Luitenant. And may I add seeing another eight-year old loose his parents might make him think as to exactly why he became batman.

  1. KLimer Says:

Plus Nolan does rely on the comics' integrity unlike Schumacher. And May I say again my Idea is to introduce pre-teen (around eight to eleven year old) DICK GRAYSON not ROBIN and perhaps have him sign and autograph to another young boy and when Dick asks who do I make this out to the kids parents reply Tim Drake.
YES I AGREE ROBIN SHOULD NOT HAVE A COSTUME till perhaps I don't know at least Batman 4 , If they'll go that far. And maybe have Bruce reflect about the times he spent with his father and wheter bailing during late afternoons would be good for a child's development.

  1. MovieFan Says:

I heard somewhere someone suggested Poison Ivy being a lawyer by day, and using the poison ivy alias to cover her eco-terrorist tracks.

Could be a partner villain to Riddler if Riddler is written as a political revolutionary focusing his intent on bringing the truth and Batman to Gotham.

Think about the consequences to Wayne if someone uncovers the truth that he is Batman and that Batman operated in a cover up (corruption, even though it was for a good intent.) Gotham's political credibility would be tarnished, Batman would be discredited, and Wayne's name would be tainted forever...and if his name is tarnished that means his dad's name would be tarnished, something Alfred told him he had responsibility to protect in BB.

Putting Wayne in a cerbral chess match with Nigma/Riddler would be a cool thriller. The Mind Games they could utilize for the Riddler would be awesome (puzzles, anagrams, games, irritating riddles and veiled messages, etc.)

If Joker's viral campaign was "Why So Serious?" The Viral campaign for the Riddler could be "Wanna Play a Game?"

I envision scenes like the ones of The Number 23, Memento, Beautiful Mind to depict the dark obsessive compulsive nature of the Riddler.

  1. Poop girl Says:

You nerds are all wrong.. I think the next villain should be Fartman..

  1. Alex Says:

Dent is definitely dead, there was a memorial service being held at the end of the film. Two-Face is out for the third movie.

Bane would be an interesting choice, but it would be hard to convey him as "real." As realistic as they could make the Venom seem, Bane is inherently "larger than life" and there would need to be a lot of effort put into making him appear grounded and believable. After psychological villains like the Scarecrow and Joker, it'd be cool to see a villain able to mentally AND physically match Batman. Although, after B&R, it'd be hard to do more of a disservice to the character. Something to consider, though, would be Bane's jailbreak of all of Batman's enemies. That would lend itself to brief, cameo roles for villains who would be unable to carry a film themselves. (IE: Killer Moth, Ventriloquist, Firefly) while Bane would be the focus of the story.

The Riddler is an obvious choice (in the vein of the slick intellectual rather than the raving prankster.) But a good one nonetheless. The basic story nearly writes itself around the Riddler. He would have to be rewritten, slightly, though. As it stands, the Riddler, while brilliant, would pale in comparison to the Joker in The Dark Knight, and the story has the potential to take a few backwards steps if his riddles are too easily solved, and he doesn't pose too great of a threat to Batman and Gotham in general. There's very little humanity with the Riddler, as well, there's no evocation of emotion, which, while making him a good enemy does not make for good storytelling.

Clayface is another decent choice. It'd be difficult to create an entire movie around him, but the character definitely has potential, and the complete lack of definition and an identity could contrast nicely with the firm, stoic symbolism of Batman.

Mr. Freeze would be a wonderful tragic character, but I think his freeze-gimmick would be too implausible. His motives aren't particularly threatening, especially in comparison to the previous two films; the character would be best utilized in a brief cameo role, still as Dr. Freis as a bit of fan service, and as great of a character as Freeze has evolved into, he doesn't have much of a place in the Nolan Bat-verse.

Personally, I've always been a fan of the Scarecrow, and I felt he was tragically underused in BB. As a purely psychological villain, he was never broken down on a psychological level, and more could have been done with him if not for the presence of Ra's. (Although I understand Ra's importance to the "first film," perhaps the Scarecrow would have been best saved for sequels.) All in all, I feel Cillian Murphy performed wonderfully, and the character had his place, but I personally wouldn't protest if he was brought back for the third film. (Not saying it'd be good for the overall storytelling, but the character is just a personal favorite.)

As it stands right now, I think an ideal route to go would be focusing on Bane, with the aforementioned Arkham escape, not as a means to crowbar in as many villains as possible, but to showcase the different facets of villainy. There wouldn't be enough screen time per villain to develop complex stories, but it would be an interesting sequence, having Batman deal with such varying degrees of insanity, then having to confront Bane himself.

  1. KLimer Says:

Now as far as actors that would fit bane well I say Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) or Michael Clarke Duncan ( Dude from Green Mile , Dare Devil) As far as Venom just make it a super steroid that doesn't show him increase as much physically but strength wise. As far as Riddler Make him first of all Spandex free. But anything about batman villains more importantly for example have the riddler do his thing before he gets the actual nickname just like the did with scare crow. Make him call him self after he maybe sees it in a newspaper article or a news story. Or if they would make the Penguin make him a mob figure or something just that his nickname is penguin and he jokingly looks like one when wearing a black and white suit and hat.

  1. Sang Says:

I think the next villains are going to be either Black Mask or Bane. Black Mask and Bane can step in from the power vacuum the Joker created. Those are the likely choices.

As for Penguin, Chris Nolan said that character does not interest him, and would be difficult to bring to the big screen.

Nolan also said, he wants to ground his version of batman in the real world--so, no new supernatural/fantastical villains for awhile. Sorry, no mr.freeze, clayface, etc.

As for Robin/Batgirl....NO! As soon as they introduce kids/teen sidekicks the movie franchise will inevitably become cheesy. The only reason why Robin/Batgirl even existed was for corporations to get kids to buy comic-related merchandise.

  1. Christian Says:

Two-Face is not dead. Harvey Dent is dead. Batman doesn't kill people and Maroni survived a fall from almost that exact same height, not to mention the fact that Batman survived the exact same fall. Furthermore, when Two-Face flipped his coin to decide whether or not to kill himself it landed heads up. The funeral at the end was for Harvey Dent. The city of Gotham needed closure on Harvey Dent, their White Knight. Two-Face I am sure is still around.

Having said that, I believe the Riddler and Two-Face could both play crucial roles. As said on this chain, the Riddler would obviously have to be evolved a great deal from the Jim Carrey cartoon version, but that could be easily done. An obsessive compulsive criminal looking for patterns in everything would be very intriguing, especially within the scenery of the politically disarrayed Gotham.

Furthermore, there is Two-Face who lives on nothing but chance and fate and is about as uncalculating as you can get. Juxtapose that with the calculating Riddler and there is instantly a storyline, complete with villains disagreeing or even fighting each other.

This scenario would allow for two extremes to be archetyped in two very different characters. It could also show that there has to be some sort of middle ground between complete order and complete chaos.

  1. only if bale and nolan are back Says:

the riddler is the obvious choice he needs to be portrayed as a dark villan with some aspects of the joker but very different, the complete cast should return after the success of these new films, bale is by far the best batman yet another actor would ruin wayne, robins time is not yet he would bring the movie down, no one could play the joker like leger and two face is dead

  1. Craig Says:

    Right. Lets get this straight.....

Harvy Dent/Two-Face died. End of story.
Batman took the blame for all Dent's wrong-doings, so as to not undo all the good things (Good) Harvey Dent stood for. Hence the big public burial of Gotham's "White Knight" at the end. They covered up the whole Two-face fiasco. It's supposed to be a tragic end for Harvey Dent. Why would they undo all that for the third movie? It dosen't make sense!!!

Secondly, Why is it an insult to have someone else play the joker? Heath ledger's performance is nothing short of amazing.....BUT..... Is/was he the ony young talented actor in hollywood? No.

If Christopher Nolan's plan was to use the Joker in the third movie, then why change that? You have to see the bigger picture.

You have to ask yourself: "What would Heath want?"

"Would Heath Ledger want the character to live on, if that is indeed the plan?"

"Does some talented actor deserve to be chosen to play the role as Heath was chosen?"

Personally, I hope the Joker comes back for the third. I hope they get someone with real talent to continue the role.
If they weren't going to bring him back they would of:
    A) Killed him.
    B) Showed him being banged up in an insane asylum.

They did niether. They left it open ended.

Anyways, I can't see there being a third batman for a long, long time. If at all. I just can't wait for the dark knight to come out on DVD. Bring on the special features!!!

    RIP Heath Ledger.

  1. Mike Says:

If you read the book version of the Dark Knight movie you find out that Harvey twisted his neck in the fall and is indeed dead.

  1. William Hart Says:

I agree, Two Face is not for sure dead and may make a semi-comeback. Harvey and Black Mask for the third movie, or Harvey and a boat load of smaller role villains (not necessarily lesser villains just give them smaller parts in a bigger scheme involving Batman and Harvey). The first movie hinted at several things that happened in this one, this one hinted at several things for the next including the possibility of more lunatics using wierd identities and schemes. Batman was a freak - he's caused the freaks to come out of the wood works and join him.

  1. tanner Says:

joker was never killed in the movie and honestly if you can bring him back if there is someone out there who can do as great of a job as Heath did then use him and introduce someone like the riddler...i dont think 2-face would be fun for a new film

  1. Kellan Schmelz Says:

they showed Dent's goddamn funeral at the end of the movie.
you're fucking retarded if you think he lived.

  1. Alex Says:

    Craig-

I agree with the notion that it wouldn't be disrespectful to bring back the Joker, but I feel his arc is well concluded. It ended with him saying "You know, I could see us doing this forever." I felt that summed up the connection between him and Batman perfectly. Plus, where would Joker fit into a third movie? He doesn't have agendas or plans, as he said, he is simply an "Agent of Chaos." In a third movie, what would he do? Show up and kill more people? It'd be retreading old ground to bring him back unless it was a brief cameo (like Scarecrow) but that's a bit unnecessary.

  1. The Batman Says:

Harvey Dent is dead. Eckart was signed on for two movies, because the Dark Knight was in fact originally suppose to be two movies, with the Joker injuring and creating Two-Face the premise of the third film in this series. however, the nolan bro's condensed this into the dark knight (hence why it is so long). At the end, he is completely unresponsive and give that the cities remaining cops were on scene as well as the eulogy they show briefly, it is safe to assume Dent died.

Why can Batman kill Dent? for one, it was to save Gordon's son from a similar fate as his, i.e seeing his parents murdered. two, the joker told him he'd have to break his only rule in order to beat him, and three, it was accidental. if you think he was trying to kill dent there, you're kidding yourself. thats not his style at all.

did anyone notice he didn't use a single batarang once in this movie. thats pretty much my only fault with the movie. as for #3 villians, the riddler, bane and black mask, because villians multiply exponentially in these movies.

  1. alyssa Says:

i think it colud be two face (if they bring him back to life) i'd love to see the riddler, maybe have scarecrow in again. and i think there should be a girl....i think it should be harley quinn. she could come and try to get revenge b/c it was batmans fault for his death ( u kinda have to kill off the joker some how no one can do the job heath did. ever.) and she could join forces with the others who also want to get revenge on batman. im not sure how the riddler could fit in, but im sure they could some how. (maybe scarecrow or two face colud get him to join in on the fun.

but the definatly need a girl in it.

and please no robin. robin is just...ew. lol

  1. Patrick Says:

Catwoman: new love interest since Rachel died.
Riddler: Can be a smart, gritty villain fitting in Nolan's vision.
Hush: Teams up with Riddler to take out Batman. (Childhood friend) Can go into more depth with Bruce Wayne's past.
Two-Face: Brief cameo like Scarecrow in The Dark Knight...scarring Hush and forcing him to wear bandages around his face.

  1. PhilliesDK Says:

I think you have to keep the "Real" feel to the series. To bad Heath died a love triangle between Batman Cat Woman Joker was inevitable.
Rachel is gone so who's his next love interest. Unless they are aiming for an even darker tone for the next flick. The riddler would be good but his character arc is too similar to Dent. Bane is only suitable for supporting role. Poison Ivy is to camp. The effects to convey Clay Face to the screen would ruin the series continuity. Cat Woman is the logical choice.... No one ever thought they could pull off a better Joker than Nicholson why not do the same with CW. I think Bane and CW would be good and could lead to an even Darker Batman movie...... Thank me later lol

  1. Anyone catch this Says:

Nolan left a joker card in Begins giving us the hint that the next one would be Joker.

In The Dark Knight he dropped another hint, but much more subtle. When they made the batsuit not equipped for dogs, Alfred said, "Though it might defend you against cats..." Was that a hint at catwoman?

    Maybe...

  1. Staypuff Says:

Hi! Just saw this film. I noticed when Bruce was talking to Fox about the new suit, he asked him if it would protect him against dogs to which the answer was "It should protect you against cats". This screamed of an intention to introduce Cat Woman in the next film, though I'm not sure how that would fit in with the new "realistic" approach. Poison Ivy is a character who could function in the "real world", plus now that Rachel is out of the way (thank goodness, Maggie Gyllenhal can't act!) a female character would be an interesting twist, again, Harley Quinn could fit the bill and she hasn't been featured in any previous film.

By the way: Heath Ledger's Joker - it's even better than I was expecting! Truly the greatest screen villain of all time, nobody can fill those shoes.

  1. Scott Says:

You people are idiots! How would it be "disrepectful" to find someone else to play Joker? The world cant contnue on after Heath Ledger decides to off him self? Gimme a break.........

  1. danjohnson Says:

It seems likely that if and when they make a third movie, they'll try to stick with the formula that's made the last two successful and avoid any villains too far into the realm of science fiction or fantasy.

Probably one of the older, lesser known super-villains like the Black Mask, who's "establishment" enough to tie in with a theme of Batman being a hated fugitive in the third movie.

Or else, if they want to take the easy way out, just trot out the League of Assassins trying to take care of the problem that Ra's al Ghul created in the first movie.

Batman as a fugitive would be an interesting way to go. No over-arching diabolical plot, no protecting Gotham. Just cops and assassins out to capture or kill Batman as the whole focus of the movie.

  1. TheGhost Says:

Well, it's obvious this series is a whole new take on the story line, much more ambivalent about hero vs villian and good vs bad. And, let's face it, much deeper and mature. In the third film, THE BATMAN IS THE VILLIAN. "I will be whatever Gotham needs me to be," he says in DK. He will take on the mantle of villian. This is the only way that Gothamites will realize they don't need Batman to stand up to evil-- everyone is the Batman-- everyone CAN be the Batman-- everyone MUST be the Batman. Not in fake Bat-suits (they tried that in DK, and didn't do well) but in their everyday lives. Jim Gordon will become the city's example. Harvey Dent was on his way to be this, but the Joker ruined it.

THAT would be the way to end the series, and for the Batman to retire (but, for good?????)

  1. etaeleifi Says:

There are some dumbasses here. Nolan has put the context of the Batman world in the "REAL" world. Meaning ours. Whatever villains that he has in the 3rd one would all have to have a real world aspect to them. They cannot be comic book retards like in the previous movies (Riddler/Two Face from the 3rd moviie/Mr. Freeze in the most lamest movie).

The villains would have to resemble to criminals from our world. As far as bad guys I would like to see Penguin as the new crime boss of Penguin (who just happens to like birds). Maybe Catwoman as a CIA agent looking to steal Batman's technology and maybe Deadshot/ Deathstroke or Mr. Freeze as mob assassins hired to destroy Batman.

But I really believe Robin needs to be in the next movie. He is the last piece to Batman's mythology that has so far been presented.

We like thse movies because they feel real, not because they have a lot of gimmicks.

  1. Tom Says:

i think they should make a new villan, you know one that no one has heard of that could really give the movie a kick am i right? and bruce meet robin but dick grayson doesn't find out he is batman until the end of the movie that way it adds lots of suspense to the next movie. and last but not least, after the tragic accident with the old one... a new bat mobile and maybe like the bat chopper or summthing

  1. tronix Says:

imo two face isnt dead, harvey dent is. they let the public know that harvey dent "the hero" passed, but kept harvey dent "two face" a secret and rushed him to the hospital of arkum. and to have him killed off with only 30 mins of fame, is stupid, considering he is such a protagonist for so many other characters in the batman lore, including a much talked about "Batman 3 villain" riddler. without two face filling riddlers head with slander and propaganda, riddler would not have become violently obsessed with figuring out who batman is, hence no real, interesting riddler story line, and nolan and goyer are all about trying to be as close to the origins as possible.

some villains i wouldnt mind seeing tho is Clayface, with all the new age movie magic that is possible now, that would be awesome, same with killer croc. and for a more mentally challenging task they could introduce the dummy scarface, black mask or even anarky.

and imho, the only way to introduce robin into the christian bale dark side of batman movie series, is to introduce him into the series, as straight up Nightwing. it may not follow the true batman storyline of it all, but come on, there is no way to have a "gee willickers" yellow red and green accented speedo teenager version of robin, into the dark version that this franchise has come to be now.

  1. ryan Says:

harvey dent the hero is dead, not harvey dent: Two face, who is locked up in arkum, without the public knowing. riddler could only be possible if two face is still alive. penguin is a horrible idea, he's boring.catwoman wouldnt get much of a fan base due to the bad taste in our mouth of the halle berry version. mr.freeze is a joke now after arnold, it would take someone even greater than ledger to put on a performance that puts ledger's to shame, to make mr.freeze rise up and not be a laughing stock in the batman franchise now.

IMO, we should see, some unknown greats from the early beginning of batman, for new fans to experience, and old fans to enjoy once again, like clay face, anarky, killer kroc, bane, and black mask.

and if ur going to introduce robin into the dark knight franchise, its going to have to be as nightwing to be taken seriously, wether it follows the exact storyline of batman and robin or not, becuz face it, with the way the franchise is atm, the red yellow and green tights and the corny "gee willickers batman" lines, wont cut it, compared to the "why so serious?".

and to all those ppl who say that riddler cant come back blah blah, disrespect this, or that, do you really think heath would want that character to die off along with him? he was an actor, an entertainer, and an artist, and all 3 of those things have something in common, they all believe that the show most go on.and if the dark knight franchise goes on as long as it should, considering how excellent the screen writing and directing of these movies are, there is no batgirl without the joker (joker ended up raping barbara gordon, commissioner gordon's daughter, thus wanting vengeance becoming the batgirl, who is later paralyzed by joker, to become the oracle) and many other batman lore characters.

  1. jer Says:

I've got a better idea than all of these. How about we leave well enough alone?

This astounding series has already re-defined what it means to be a great comic book movie. Why not continue to set itself apart by avoiding the inevitable awful threequel?

The Dark Knight simply can't be topped. I have all the faith in the world in Christopher Nolan - but I'd rather see him move on to something else now.

Of course, if he decides to do it, I'll be behind him all the way and rabidly follow all developments - but I'm hoping that the franchise can bow out while it's so wonderfully far ahead.

  1. Jack Napier Says:

"At the end of the film Two-Face is pushed off a building by Batman, but producer Emma Thomas said the fall was ambiguous enough to suggest that he may still be alive"

  1. nick n Says:

Robin could very well be in this movie. I even think this is hinted at in the Dark Knight when bruce, rachel, natasha, and harvey are eating at the restaturant. Dent states that although the town is happy to have a vigilante, he knows BATMAN cant do it forever; thus the need for a sidekick. Even if robin is an immature kid, christian bale's batman will train him, just like in batman and robin from 1996.

as for villians, its rumored in hollywood that jonny depp wil play the role of the riddler and phillip seymour hoffman will play the penguin. obviously, the scarecrow, joker and even two face can be in this next installment. the scarecrow sure as hell never died as the city was no longer concerned with him, the joker was left hanging but remember...GOTHAM IS HOME TO CROOKED COPS. those swat team members could've easily just let him go. as for two-face, he is alive and will be in the next one most likely. the coin flipped heads, batman survived the fall, so did two face.

and finally, the next film will be called "The Caped Crusader" and the tagline will be "Any Questions?" to relate to the riddler.

  1. Roger Dulay Says:

have you guys been even following nolan's batman?

it's based on realism and believability. remember, it took one whole movie just to justify bruce wayne donning a bat-costume, that would be the same case in justifying robin. besides, nolan and bale themselves said that they don't want or even need a robin in these series

as for the villains, the choices are limited despite the huge rogues gallery that bats has. this series is based on realism so sci-fi villains such as freeze and poison ivy are pretty much out.

while the mutant freaks such as man-bat, clayface, and croc won't fit in nolan's world...

they'll tap into villains that are believable enough to exist in our world (depending on their portrayal). such as riddler, bane (at a certain extent), penguin (without the penguin-based origin), talia al ghul, lady shiva, maybe even deathstroke, and hugo strange...

  1. Lou Albano Says:

Nolan created a Batman in a plausible / real tone. There should be a new villian for the next Batman. The Riddler would be a good choice and to have him be a Unabomber type that likes to play games with the media.
Guy Pierce should play the Riddler. I think he would bring an edge to the character that Nolan likes to use.

  1. Nicky Says:

I personally want to see Harley go after the guy who got her 'Mistah J' stuck in the asylum. If they are going to leave the Joker alone out of respect, she could go solo.
However, if they do bring back the Joker (and think about it guys, don't you reckon Heath would feel pretty darn bad if he knew because of his death the Joker can never be used again?) it would be the perfect time to introduce Harley, seeing as she was a doctor in the asylum. Also, it would be brilliant to see Joker's emotions develop through Harley and to see him conflicting with them. To quote Sorkin 'Everyone else sees the Joker laugh; Only Harley has ever seen him cry'. It would be an emotional rollercoaster if they were to bring in Harley, at least in my opinion. I'd like them to darken her charcter a tad though, she was adorable in the animated series, but I think they could make her dark, quirky and a little crazy.

  1. Jessebelle Says:

Ummm... I read the tie-in movie novel, and I think everyone else needs to as well. I'm not going to get the exact page number, but go to the local book store and check near the back. I clearly remember the line "He was obviously dead" in regards to Harvey/ Two Face. I actually chuckled, because I think Dennis O'Neil purposely put that there to kill all speculation. I'm sorry, it sucks, I know. Also... it's a kids movie. No one is suggesting Rachel is still alive just because we didn't see her splattered into a thousand pieces. "Maybe she survived and will become Harlequinn!" No. It's the fan's desire to see Two Face in the next film, but everyone, please stop living in denial.

  1. KLimer Says:

I feel that if they do introduce robin he should not be a crime fighting character just yet. Just like Nolan has created a complex fun to watch Bruce Wayne side if they include Robin they should focus on Dick Grayson.

As far as costume is concerned , Batman's costume managed to evolve from a blueish-grayish crap to a full tactical dark gray/black infatry suit so can robin they key is to use robin's green as an army low saturated green and dark maroon with the same gauntlets and cape as batman and thee you go.

As far as Dick Grayson's intro: Some people don't like the circus part about him. The truth is that Robin perhaps not the smartest fighter at first but his physical prowess and agility learned at the circus gives him some advantage. If not circus then something in gymnastics or judo or something to make him at least slightly trained. But the circus part fits better to an eight to eleven year old boy.

To those guys that like Nighwing but not Robin. Well Before he becomes nightwing he is Robin. It is later that hostility build between batman and robin which makes the first robin become Nightwing good set of stories perhaps toward later batman sequels or a nightwing series.

  1. LetsPutaSmileOnThatFace Says:

For the main villain, i think it should be:

HUSH. His character story is a perfect fit. He's the anti-Batman, but a near equal to Bruce Wayne. It makes perfect sense to bring in someone from Wayne's past since Rachel Dawes is now gone...the movie can open in the same fashion as Batman Begins, with a scene from Wayne's childhood with Tommy (aka Hush) showing the duality between the two boys and how from similar backgrounds grew to take completely different paths.

    As the ancillary villain:

TWO-FACE - in my opinion they should bring back Two Face, but not as the main villain...even though Harvey Dent was killed, Two Face was not. i don't think they stretched out Two Face to his full potential. Maybe that was all apart of the Nolan plan...who knows?

If they do NOT bring back Two-Face then i think:

THE RIDDLER - if they make the Riddler a mass murdering SAW-like villain ofr a SE7EN type of killer, the film would be amazing!

In addition to either Two-Face or The Riddler, i think Catwoman (or just plain Selina Kyle) needs to be introduced.

CATWOMAN - Selina Kyle needs to be introduced, even if she doesn't become Catwoman in the film. Bruce needs a female opposite, and Selina Kyle is purrrfect. It would be a great way to revive the atrocity that Halle Berry committed against the character. Maybe they can make her a desperate woman in need of money so she turns to petty robbery in order to pay her bills, who gets thwarted by Batman, but he then befriends her while trying to stop her. It would further push the whole duality between good and evil that Nolan is going for.

  1. destruct26 Says:

personally, only one of you has made valid points in your argument that Dent is dead, and that is 'The Batman' But, in defense, you can get away with the speculation that someone like Ras Al Ghul dying, because Nolan gave him the ideals and ways to seem immortal, without mentioning the Lazarus Pits, so u can fantasize unrealistically after the movie is done that his assassins got his burnt ass to a Pit. But Two Face? In Batman, there ARE NO ACCIDENTS when it comes to someone getting killed. I dont buy it. Yes they gave him a funeral, but no one knew the extent of his injuries, and then the hospital was INCINERATED. Can you say empty/closed casket? I saw a man on his back that could have also been in a coma- so, you lock his ass up somewhere and Bruce pays off the right peeps to shutup and take care of him, Gordon tells Ramierez to can it or she lose her job. see?

  1. John Jackson Says:

Wont be the riddler, but if he was he should have him as a serial killer leaving riddles as clues. Then if Harvey Dent is alive then have him hunting him down to.

  1. spud33 Says:

The catwoman would be a nice secondary villian in the next film...and Angelina Jolie has the acting chops to pull it off. She is capable of bringing the edge to the catwoman character, and she is well suited to action roles. The key to the success would be to "not" sex it up too much (if that is possible with her), and to stay away from an overt "relationship" thing between her and the Batman. Jonny Depp as Riddler, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Pinguin would be excellent choices.

  1. shell Says:

All of you have no clue...Harvey Dent is dead but 2Face is not. If you go to the warner bros website, it will give you an idea of who will be in the 3rd movie. 2Face will be back-They are writing the joker out of the script because of Ledger's death. The website also tells you who is out: Riddler, Penguin, Mad Hatter, Bain, Poison Ivey.

  1. eric Says:

    Clayface or Mad Hatter.

The Hatter's a creepy dude when you read about his: likes young blonde girls, mind control and could be designed every bit as creepy as joker if done right. Bring real crime into the mix and have him kidnap girls or something freaky like that and having crazed "tea parties" like the kind he had in the "Knightfall" series.
Clayface with the Matt Hagen backstory like in the Animated Series could have some incredible special effects ever seen also if done right. I'm thinking Johnny Depp might be the only one I could see as Riddler, even though Riddler is kind of a boring yawn character. Catwoman's totally tainted, thanks to Hallie.

  1. Gary Says:

Dont rule out scarecrow, the possibility was left open by the ferry scene in Dark Knight.

  1. TheBlaqueBastard Says:

I Think alot of ppl are mising the gaping point when it comes to harvey dent.. he ID dead.. twoface however..if theres anything this movie teaches is unless the coffin goes in the ground he aint dead.. the thing with Harveys name being protected to save gotham rings so true its unreal..however what alot of u are missing is the facrt that he WILL show up & start rampaging chaos & gotham WILL again sink into confusion and dispair.. ppl will sloooowly realise Batman took the fall for a now insane Dent & hopefully rally behind him & equally as many wont believe and instead choose to think he prolly had sumthin to do with the mess...with that established Batman HAS to re-emergeas he feels PERSONALLY responsible for letting harvey become what he now is, & another thingif an i say IF a bunch of whacked out nutjobs emmerge its NOT because of Baman.. but derrrr thinnnnnnk about it for a sec...The Joker.. the SAME way Batman inspired misguided an hapless attempts at vigilantism its only logical the Grandiose nature of the jokers exploits appealed to the already fractured crims already on the loose, as for sequel possibilities.. The joker is NOT deadhes LOCKED AWAY for EVER derrr.. yehh he COULD have escaped the cops biut i doubt its necessary keep him locked away until 1: u find an actor capable of doin it justice and 2: the public nolonger care so much someone else is gettin what must b THE hardest role to follow..only TWO considerations for the Joker shud viably be shudn be [& HOWs no one ELSE has thought of this] Daniel Day Lewis..& to a lesser degree Depp.. tho really it WONT happen ashe would have been better putting his OWN take on joker..DDL tho a BIT older than Ledger is The ONLY actor out ther rite NOW with the chops to deliver a carbon copy wwith his OWN considerable menace perfomance

Viable Villains for the third actare the almost Obvious Rise of the 2face, Hush is also a viable character as the Master manipulater in the comic not the riddler who was what i call a last second patsy villain..[they wanted a REALLY unexpected twist so Nigma got the bag at the end.] The second & Most viable is Bane as most ppl didn even KNOW WHAT that thing dat turned up in B&R was he'll have no media damage, i think the potential of Bane[Vin Diesel? comeback?Keith Hamilton Cobb?] as the Master criminal whos the basic antithesis of batman would be a good ongoing fuedm, buteven MORE interesting would be the emergence of "Robin" or Grayson..TOTALLY reinvented doesnt even HAVE to be circus based he could be a Romany gypsy orphan who took up parkour what HAS to be present however is the implementation of ALL 3 Robin characteristics ESPECIALLY Jason Todd.. not the annotin twattish Jason Todd but the re-emerged revenge seeking ingenius ruthless Jason Todd..somrthin to think about.. but obviously he eventually comes good, he dont NEED to adopt him jus set him up in his own Batcave & let him do his thing..his image as a sex/booz/model crazy socialite wouldn b helped if he went n RANDOMLY adopted sum kid off he streets.or WOULD it..? OR i leave u to consider the best possibility of all SUPERMAN brcause lets face it topping TDK is gna be nigh on impossible..the ULTIMATE villain for Bats would indeed be the Ultimate Hero.. think about it.. in the end Batmans a fugitive..not just a "tolerated vigilante" but a notorious murderer having lkilled 6 ppl INCLUDING a famous DA now we KNOW the PoPo cant TOUCH Bats.. but with the public outcry against Bats for killing their "hero" Kal Els attention could be drawn afterall Big Blues got TWO weaknesses Kryptonite & government lobbies & its not hard to envision a scenario wher He gets "sent" to apprehend Batman..hence bringin about the most anticipated "meeting"/"clash" in comic-movie history if done right EASILY able to top the Superb joker era AND setup the inevitable Justice League franchise [OR NOT]

  1. gatmannn Says:

harvey dent is dead, two face however, his alter ego, is still alive. The funeral is symbolic of harvey dent's complete transformation into his more evil self, who is obviously two-face. his old self is dead, but not his new self

  1. KLimer Says:

Just WATCH BATMAN ANIMATED SERIES EPISODE ROBIN'S RECKONING ,which by the way WON AN EMMY IN '93 I believe IN adult DRAMA category. Just block some corny line and focus on the story and I think it would be a good staple to set robin up THE FLASHBACKS I MEAN. JUST LET ROBIN MARINATE FOR THREE MORE MOVIES AND THEN BAKE.

THE FIRST ROBIN IS AN ACROBAT AND IS GONNA BE A REMINDER FOR BRUCE WHY HE CHOSE THE MANTLE. JUST LIKE TWO FACE IS LEAVING EVERYTHING TO CHANCE. JUST LIKE JOKES IS CHAOS AND NO ONE WILL KNOW HIS TRUE IDENTITY. JUST LIKE BATMAN WON'T KILL ANYONE. THESE ARE CHARACTERISTICS WHICH MAKE THESE CHARACTERS WHO THEY ARE.

COMBINATION OF ROBIN'S RECONING'S FLASHBACKS AND SOME POST CRISIS COMICS

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dick's origins and history, like Bruce Wayne's, remain relatively unchanged, save for a few minor details. He is now a 12-year old acrobat who witnesses the murder of his parents. Prior to the incident, he and his family meet a six year old Tim Drake, who would cross paths with him one day. Dick confronts the man who cut the ropes, only to be struck violently across the face. Batman, who is investigating the crime at that time, saves the boy and attacks the assassin. Dick gets a mild concussion and passes out. He is treated at the hospital and sent to a juvenile home, where he is abused by several inmates. After this injustice is discovered, he is moved to a Catholic orphanage. He tries to escape but is stopped by Batman, who assures him he will not be there for long. Shortly afterwards, Bruce Wayne, now feeling sympathy for the boy, has Dick removed from social services and placed as his legal ward. Originally, he only adopts the boy as a legal charge, since Dick does not want to replace his deceased father. Shortly after meeting Bruce, Dick discovers Bruce's playboy, womanizing image, and he comes to conclude that his adoption was just to gain positive publicity for Wayne. He has discomfort and lack of belonging at Wayne Manor, as an investigating Bruce was never around much, leaving Alfred Pennyworth as the main caregiver and only confidante

  1. john nguyen Says:

I am pretty sure that 2-face/dent died in the end- so there will be no 2-face returning.

i think either Johnny depp play the riddler or philip seymore hoffman as the penguin. I think that the new batman movies should focus more on realistic type characters.... So please... no Mr. Freeze...or Clayface ...

  1. Ryan Says:

i think that they should bring the joker back because he is batmans arc-enemy and is like the best villan ever besides what would batman be without the joker?

  1. kassi Says:

You guys don't have much of an attention span do you?

The Joker is caught by police in the end. They show that. He's obviously gonna be under high security for quite awhile. There isn't any loose end there.

Two Face fell from two stories. He's not dead. Sal Maroni fell from that height and so did Batman, so why would it kill Dent? They even discuss making him a martyr. Its very obvious that he's alive and being lied about, they tell you that.

    Pay Attention next time.

  1. oh Says:

Hey in TDK, the ferry boat scenes with the criminals on it had "Zeus" the former wrestler, on it who took the the detonator and threw it out the window. Could that huge, strong, mean looking, deep, criminal be Bain?

  1. deon Says:

Let me start off by saying that I disagree with most of you that says that it would be disrespectful to recast someone to play the Joker because Heath is not around anymore. First off as cruel as it may sound, Heath did it to himself. It's one thing to be in a car accident and die, but his was self inflected. Second, if something should happen to you personally, do you think it would be fair for your boss to leave your job open and not hire someone to fill your position? And lastly, the Joker is Batman's greatest/most popular enemy and to leave him out of any future movies would be bad for the product. With all of this said, they should not recast for the character for the simple reason that 80% of you think that it's a bad idea and since you're the ones going to buy the tickets to see it...

Now to who should be the next villians...

I love the way Depp gets into his characters and I think that he would make a great Riddler. The only thing is that they would have to make him like Jigsaw from the SAW series. Putting people in situations that if they don't solve the riddle in a certain amount of time, they die a horrible death.

The "fantasy creature" villians. Man-bat and Killer Croc. Both would make a great villian in the next film, and bring in the next bat vehicle.(aircraft with the Man-bat and watercraft with Killer Croc) But since Nolan doesn't seem to want to go out of reality, these may not work. Also in this group would be Clayface.

Batman will be the next "villian"...

The one I would like to see is Reaper. For those that don't know, he is just like Batman (sort of). He is a "hero" in the since that he catches criminals but instead of bringing them to justice in the court of law, he brings his own justice, which usually ends with a death sentence. This would go great with the way they ended DK. Batman is now a criminal since he is taking blame for Two-Face's crimes. Batman goes into hiding and the city is overrun with criminal activity. In come Reaper to find and capture the city's criminals including Batman . The Reaper kills a few mob bosses and petty theives. Batman is forced out of hiding in order to confront the mad man.

  1. Andre Says:

These are lesser known villains but what about Lew Moxon and The Wrath?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lew_Moxon

Moxon is most famous for hiring Joe Chill to murder young Bruce Wayne's parents (in early versions of Batman's origin story), thus making him indirectly responsible for Batman's existence.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrath_(comics)

The Wrath served as a sort of anti-Batman. The Wrath's appearance and motivation are reminiscent of Batman's, but with notable differences. The Wrath (like Batman) is distinguished by perfectionism and obsession in what he does. His costume is also very similar to Batman's (though colored in crimson and purple with a W-insignia on the chest and cowl). The Wrath's parents were a couple of burglars, similar to Joe Chill. They were shot by a young policeman who mistook them for committing a robbery. Due to this, the Wrath dedicated his life to a campaign of revenge against law and law-enforcers. When the Wrath finally returns to Gotham City, he comes to kill the man who had shot his parents. The Wrath's target turns out to be James Gordon, commissioner of the Gotham City Police and an ally of Batman.

If Batman is ever to escape the label of being a murderer in the Nolan Universe, then the character of The Wrath can assist in the police believing that it was The Wrath who committed the murders in "The Dark Knight"

I think having these two characters, along with the return of Joker or Two-face could definitly form a great script based around the theme of "revenge".

  1. Ventril quest Says:

Joker and two face are out of the picture. Two face is dead and joker should be referenced as locked up. The next villain should be The Ventriloquist. An insane guy who portrays his split personality as a puppet gangster. The puppet should be broken slightly, more creepy than the cartoons, and totally crazy. Then he should have two bodyguards, Bane and Firefly. Firefly can be optional, but a high tech arsenist would be cool. Bane could juist be a cool lookin guy (with a mask!) standing in the back with firefly. Batman and Bane could have an awesome fight if Bane was a martial artist super strong guy. And the firefly fight would be cool in the sky, but Batman can whoop him on the ground. And this might be overdoing it alittle, but a side character could a club owner/smuggler named chesterfield cobblepot. His short stocky build and tuxedo gets him his nickname, which he hates, the penguin. Another possibility could be the riddler with the same premis of bane or firefly being the bodyguard guys woh do all his dirty work. But Robin is a dfinite NO! And this may sound a little weird, but how does a Batman Beyond movie sound? Some cool futuristic things, the joker gang which should be darker and scarier, and the old Bruce Wayne. The character of Terry mcguiness needs to be slightly redone, making him alittle more like Bruce Wayne and not just some kid. A possibility could be he's already a gymnist and he discovers Bruce is Batman, steals the new suit, he's okay but gets pretty beat up, and for some reason Bruce Wayne trains him to be a real Batman. I'm not sure who would make a good villain, but the splicing thing should definitley be introduced. I'l do a little research and try to get some more Beyond stuff out there.

  1. CEEJAY Says:

Okay... the whole thing is that yesterday there was a news release that stated that Angelina Jolie is deciding whether or not to take on the role of Cat Woman. And the suit won't protect him against cats. Cat Woman would be great because there will be a female in the movie who is something other than a LOVE INTEREST. She will be a villian, a love interest, and leave the movie open for a whole lot more. As long as she is nothing like Halley Barry's craptastic version. Angie is a good choice, but is should be someone less known i.e. Cillian Murphy, who can bring a good mix of Michelle Pfiefer and Julie Newmar. If someone can blend the two iconic represtentations it will be magic. Someone who will captivate as well as Christian and Heath. I personally would like to see someone Beautiful but not typical beautiful, someone who can play Celina Kyle, and Catwoman, but not lose the one while portraying the other. Zooey Dechanel!!!

  1. Batman Says:

They said Johnny depp is gonna play riddler and philip seymour hoffman mite be penguin. Also, Christian Bale said he wont play as Batman if they put Robin in the next movie or movies, cuz hes too corny, theyve already shown a "dark" batman and hes good just by himself, having robin would make him look wack. They should make Bane though, I cant wait to see the new viallians n how there gonna look

  1. Brian C Says:

Hi i love the batman movies ecpiacially the new ones.. Heath ledger did an astonishing joker although jack nicholson did do a great joker too but he was nowhere as good as heath but im totally agreeing with nolan with this like its great that he's not going to put the villians in order in each movie like the old batman movies like they already did it they put two-face in it and he wasnt in the first old batman movie he was in the third and i think that if they put the riddler in the new batman movie because it would be great to put another loon it it Lol but the question is "Who Will Play As Him?" i think that the way they were goig to put johnny depp instead of heath ledger "If heath didnt want to play the role" but since heath did do it and there is alot of a simularity between Joker And Riddler , i think that depp would fit the job for the riddler! :D

  1. Michael White Says:

i could imagine after the events of dark knight a power struggle beginning with the criminal underworld up for grabs. maybe a turf war between a highly modernised penguin (make him much younger, maybe an arms dealer) and Black Mask (a mob boss obssessed with the concepts of people and their "masks". Batman gets caught in the middle.

  1. KLimer Says:

I agree with the comment above regarding similarity between joker and riddler. If they are not going to replace heath and sideline joker, riddler would fill that void if portrayed correctly of course. Since both Joker and Riddler are characters made to test Batman's limits. Joker time and time again is trying to make batman brake his only rule. Riddler on the other hand despite the similarity is a schemer and would test batman's intelligence and detective smarts.

Joker sould be played by Daniel day lewis. Lewis is a great actor and friend of heath. i think he has the same build and look to duplicate ledgers preformance. the main story is between batman and ridler, with ridler being played by Johnny Depp. im the middle of the movie, ridler, figures joker as a friend and breaks him out of arkham. joker goes along with him adding his jokes and twists to the plot. In the end, riddler confronts batman, in order to kill him. At the last moment, joker intervines, asking the ridler if he would like to know how he got his scarrs. A confused, and scared riddler inquires, and delays batman's demise. Joker then kills ridler, quoting that he was a cheap imitation, and in doing so, perposely saves batman, and having a battle with a weakened batman, in which joker taunts batman, and reveals his unusual obsession with him. Joker tells batman the true story about his scars, which is reminicent of the true origin of the joker, having the joker under the guise of red hood, in a pre batman begins era. the tale also involves his pregnant wife murdured by falcone thugs and him driven to insanity, by what a crooked cop that tells him he needs to smile more. In the end, batman make the denomination that joker inflicted the cuts to his face by his own accord. joker escapes shortly before gordon and the cops arrive, saying that they will have fun in the weeks that follow. gordow and the GCPD allow batman to escape and even offer medical treatment. the film ends with alfred and bruce in the new batcave. alfred suggest a partner. he says: "maybe we can find a lad with your determination" bruce mumbles: " a sidekick would lighten the mood..., I'll get you a suit alfred"

  1. kid Says:

i think that joker should have a more prominent part in the following batman films... i mean he is the single gretest batman villan right? and the reason i saw the dark knight 3 times wasnt because of batman, or heath for that matter. the joker. heath was great but i think that someone with the same determination and skill can master the joker caracter. i will be really disapointed if nolan discards the joker after dark knight, or gives him some kind of stupid sideline death. joker is the gretest villan ,and should be in more than one movie. really, who can top joker in the comics? batman and joker are like cookies and milk. nolans going to disapoint alot of people, if he dosnt follow up on the joker.

p.s. heath wasnt the only talented guy in the world. have a little faith nolan...

  1. that guy Says:

Would it be too far fetched to say that maybe they will creat a new bad guy for the next film? Do something shocking and make up a new villain that has never appeared before...

  1. Junior Roberts Says:

FIRST THING FIRST...... "The Dark Knight" was THE best comic-book adaption movie to ever hit the big screen, and thats saying alot coming from me cause Im a Marvel fanatic. TDK had every aspect of the modern comic-book from the Good vs. Evil to the political drama and a special aspect was involved when they thrusted Harvey/Two-Face character in the midst as the "White Knight" who turned to become the bad guy. As Harvey Dent said himself, "you either die a hero or live long enough to become the bad guy".

SECOND.... I DISAGREE with everyone who keeps mentioning that the Joker should be in the next film. ARE YOU SERIOUS???? Whether Heath was alive or not, no disrespect, but I wouldn't want to see The Joker in the next film. I want to see someone new and exciting and more challenging to batman. Don't get me wrong, I'm a guy that always cheers for the bad guy and Heath played the best villain EVER, but I want something new if I'm gonna dish out another $12 at the theaters.

AS OF TODAY, the rumors are of Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman (who played a great villain in MI3) to play The Riddler and The Penguin. I had already predicted Depp's possible role in the next film and glad I was right but I like the additional bonus of Hoffman added to the roster. I think Riddler and Penguin would be the absolute best direction for the Batman franchise. You have to respect the direction that Nolan is taking The Bat. Realistic and dark... exactly how Batman (and Gotham) should be envisioned.

  1. Junior Roberts Says:

    AGREE OR DISAGREE....

Please reply with a comment if you agree or disagree, but here are some of my thoughts and ideas in regards to the next installment in the Batman series.

    1) In the comic books, Batman was considered a detective before a superhero. He was labeled in the DC realm "The World's Smartest Hero". I mean, Batman debut in a comicbook entitled "Detective Comics" for god's sake. The dude is smart. And in the Dark Knight, the director and producer cleverly hinted at his intelligence and his growing expertise on crime scene investigation. From the scene where he wanted to be alone in the safe and especially the scene back at his headquarters where he did the test on the brick/bullets to get the fingerprint (genius!). They are trying to display his growing intelligence as he gains experience and what better way to do that than to go up against another genius. Riddler was crafty, twisted and highly intelligent. Riddler against the Batman would make for a great story, especially with Batman now veiwed as enemy #1. maybe they can have another villain. Most of the other batman movies had two villains, but they always joined forces (batman returns, penguin and catwoman had a short allegiance). why not have the riddler and another villain, but they never join forces. what if they don't even like each other???

    2) NEVER, NEVER, EVER, EVER put Robin in this new series of batman. I dont even wanna know the circus is in town in Gotham. Adding Robin (or any other sidekick for that matter) would DESTROY the franchise. Evidence.... Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.

    3) With the destruction of the Batmobile, we should definitely be seeing a new one in the next film. As well as the debut of the Batcave and a new Wayne Manor.

    4) With the direction that Nolan is taking with the franchise, he is trying to portray the batman world as realistically as possible. I think this is great cause the audience can relate more. Unfortunately, this means a few of our favorite villains are already cast out of selection (goodbye Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Man-Bat, Killer Croc), but it still leaves open a great roster of baddies. I believe the best villains to have in future series (or even along with the riddler in the next film) are: The Madd Hatter, Penguin, Poison Ivy (to a certain level), Ventriloquist and Scarface.

    5) Two-Face is dead. Leave it that...

  1. kid Says:

YA kno.. i completly agree with you. i just dont think that joker is equal to any other villan, whether hes played by ledger or not, he is and always will be batman's opposite, and greatest villan. Im not saying that he should be the star of the next film, or that he should be one of two villans, im just sayin that hes pretty freakin awesome, and that i wanna see more batman vs. joker. im just sayin that nolan left it open, and that the joker diserves a greater role, then just one movie. i see now that nolan left an open end to dark knight similar to batman begins. personally it would be awesome to see some villans reborn in nolan's version of batman, which include ridler, catwoman and many others, but anytime i see a batman cartoon show, or crack open the pages of the comic book, i see joker finding some intricate way to escape from arkham and once again reaking havoc in gotham. maybe a subplot that has joker meeting harleen quinzel or something like that, which would leave him open for future films. TDK showed how sadistic and insane joker was, but i think theres room for rapid expansion. level with me here.

  1. JesusChrist Says:

As much as it pains me....Two Face is dead, just when they got him right. He had an intricate story he was Harvey Dent the whole movie, we got to see the accedent and they made him look perfect....and then he got 15 min of being Two Face and then dead....Disapointing.
I would love to see Ra's Al Ghul come back cuz hes my favorit, and in keeping with the real Ra's hes probly not dead. But i think we can all agree that the strongest possibility is The Riddler, and i think thats a great idea, the Riddler is a great Nolan character. I think what Nolan has done with the Batman Film Series is nothing short of spectacular, and i think no matter who he chooses, hes gonna deliver, i say we all get suprised together, but the villian to show us in the trailer, will be the Riddler, the other will be a suprise. It would be cool however to see Talia Al Ghul come back for vengence/love intrest. But that may or may not happen.

  1. JesusChrist Says:

The face, the background, the accident, the crime spree of vengence, Nolan i have to say, bravo. Your Two Face was the way it should have been done. That being said, givin him 15 min as Two Face and then killin him off, very disapointing....and he is dead, sorry guys. Well that sucky fact aside, i think we can all agree, with this new realistic and awsome take on batman Nolan is doing, the Riddler is our new villian. Its a wonderful idea and Riddler is very much a Nolan character, i cant wait to see what he does with it. As for a second villian i would love to see Talia Al Ghul come to avenge her father and as a love intrest, which is a real possibility, knowing Nolan. Other than that i have no idea who they could possibily do, in keeping with the comics, Joker being Batmans #1 bad guy being out of commission...they need to bring in who we all know is #2 ......Catwoman..perhaps Tim Burtons wife ( i forget her name ) could play the part, but iv heard they dont want Catwomen or Penguin. Penguin is understandable not to have. but Catwomen on the other hand, all tho already done great, should be in the new one. In all honesty tho, and i think i speak for most, i would very much like it if Nolan pulled a resurection on Two Face, but i would settle for Ra's Al Ghul comin back ( hes my favorite ) and he needs the Lazarus Pits ( i know, not realistic, but still ) P.S. this is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R where eliminated.

  1. Roach Says:

I think the Mad Hatter and Riddler would be good.

MAD HATTER: Jervis Tetch is fascinated with hats of all shapes and sizes, as well as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking Glass, particularly favoring the chapter 'A Mad Tea Party'. He is obsessive-compulsive, highly delusional, suffers from psychotic manic depression, and can even sometimes be homicidal. He exhibits delusions and thought processes typical of schizophrenia. Not only is he often known to quote and reference Carroll's Wonderland novels, but he often fails to discern between these stories and reality. As shown in Secret Six, he won't eat a piece of food that doesn't have a hat on it. It has been hinted in recent years that he is a pedophile, kidnapping little girls with the name "Alice".

THE RIDDLER: The Riddler is obsessed with riddles, puzzles and word games. He delights in forewarning both Batman and the police of his capers by sending them complex clues. As the Riddler, the character is always depicted as wearing a domino mask either with a green suit and bowler hat, or a green jumpsuit. He often carries a cane shaped as an elongated question mark.
Like most major Batman villains, the Riddler has become a darker, more three-dimensional character in recent years. Whereas he was once portrayed as a playful but sane criminal trickster, he is now the smooth-talking, yet quirky, victim of an intense obsessive compulsion. This was first introduced in the 1965 issue of Batman (titled, "The Remarkable Ruse of The Riddler") in which he tries to refrain from leaving a riddle, but fails. This compulsion has been a recurring theme, albeit with a darker edge, as shown in a 1999 issue of Gotham Adventures, in which he tried to commit a crime without leaving a riddle, but fails: "You don't understand. .. I really didn't want to leave you any clues. I really planned never to go back to Arkham Asylum. But I left you a clue anyway. So I... I have to go back there. Because I might need help. I... I might actually be crazy."

  1. The Normal One Says:

You people are all nuts! What normal person will go on endlessly about these films and who will or will not appear in a yet-to-be-decided third film?

Also, as far as Heath Ledger is concerned...Who cares? He overdosed, and I'll put money on it that he did it to kill himself. He suffered from depression, but everyone is so wrapped up in his so-called "genious" that they can't stand the thought he wanted to end it all.

And what makes him a "genious" at his craft? Yes, he was a good actor. But was he really an amazing actor? I think his death inflated people's opinions of him. My god, you people talk about him as if he was Jesus Christ himself!

Get over it...the guy is gone. And if the producers decide to use a computer generated image of him, or another actor to replace him, in a third film - even if it is very brief and intermittent - then they have the right to do so. It happens all the time in film whenever someone dies or in the case of contractual disputes. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't work. That's up to the producers to decide.

Get over it people...Live your lives for today, instead of enraptured by some movie that may not happen for two more years - if at all!

  1. Raider Man Says:

I know no one thinks the Joker can be brought back and if so who could possible even come close to touching what Ledger did for this character,...But can anyone say Leonardo Di Caprio? I can see Nolan going way out and doing something perhaps no one could imagine and possible even introducing a so-called "hero" and making him/her as a villian type whose motive are not made certain and then coming back with Ra's or the Joker "escalation" at the end.

    Im just sayin! lol

  1. rave Says:

    Possible characters for the sequel?

    How about:

-AZRAEL (batman's fan should know this guy)
    -The Riddler
    -Black Mask
    -Talia Al Ghul
    -Hugo Strange (cameo)
    -Harley Queen (cameo)
-& a lil' bit of joker... (arkham's scene)

    And for the title?

    How about:

    .: Shadows of Gotham :.

    xD

Aaron Eckhart says himself that he is not coming back. This is all subject to change I'm sure but according to this interview there are no plans to bring him into the next installment.

  1. Daniel Says:

i think that if nolan does bring in the riddler it would be a pretty interesting movie. Lets face it, you cant use joker again. Maybe at the end of the 3rd movie, gordon puts on the bat signal, and batman comes, asking whats wrong, and gordon could reply, "its the Joker. Hes taking 6 hostages on so and so, and then batman could reply something snarky like "not again" or something. But you defintely cant use a new joker. Again, with the riddler. He was a very big part in the comics, and even though he had a smart intllectual side to him, he also had that strange, psychoticness to him like the joker. And, you dont need Two-face to introduce Riddler. As well as nolan has done with the movies, im sure they can find a "real" life situation to bring him in. I personally own every batman comic there ever was, and every episode and movie made, so i now pretty muh all the characters, and riddler by far is the only one i could see in the 3rd movie if they make one. I could see them adding catwoman, but not as a huge role. As for other characters, the fictional ones would never make it, but smaller, more life like ones could be starred as smaller roles throughout the movie. I could also see the 3rd movie starting out with a villian onthe loose and batman chasing him down, kinda like what they did in batman forever with two face. Preferbly, the could introduce Scaface and wesker if the did do that. The only other villians i think they could add is bane as a hyped up drug user that o'd on to much steroids, and the body. Otherwise this movie would turn out a drag. ANd please, as much as i enjoy the batman franchise and all the orginal characters, no robin. that wouldnt be fair to Bale's performance. and finally, if they do cast the riddler, i think his title saying should stay as "Riddle me this..".

  1. BaNe Says:

guys we kinda need bane! he can be this cool martial artist guy who can actually fight batman. Like a super cool fist fight on top of a building or somethin. And riddler might be cool for a mental challenge against batman. And i like that guys idea about the batman beyond movie that would be sweet!

  1. SuperJoker Says:

Riddler or Poison Ivy please. They both make sense.

Poison Ivy would provide a reason for Wayne to not keep Batman hidden - because she would attack Bruce Wayne, head of industry and all that she despises.

Riddler's potential is great. An obsessive compulsive who dabbles in cyber terrorism or something similarly relevant in this day and age. I loved the idea of him following The Joker's footsteps but disagreeing with his ideals and instead of being totally self absorbed and hedonistic, maybe he actually believes he's the good guy trying to find Batman, as he gets closer to the truth he becomes more obsessed with exposing it, to the point where he's willing to kill and commit terrible acts and gets lost in the "game" himself, losing his mind and falling prey to the "the worst things have been done in the best of intentions" thing. That would also provide a good reflection for Wayne - as he sees Nygma decend into obsession, he realises he could also end up doing the same as Batman. Sounds good to me.

You could even have a cool moment where Batman/Wayne realises that he NEEDS people like Joker and Riddler in order to define who he is. Joker alluded to it the first fi
