Ricky Gervais has done so much brilliant work in television with The Office and Extras that you'd figure his first big movie would be as groundbreaking and hilarious as the TV shows. Unfortunately, it's looking more like Ghost Town will be the most generic kind of Hollywood comedy, with a high concept and a handful of random stars packed into a tight hour and a half.
This is all speculation based mostly on the movie's trailer, but the new poster kind of confirms it. Showing Gervais' character with a translucent and ghostly Greg Kinnear (who I love, by the way), the poster bears one of the most uninspired taglines I've ever seen: "He sees dead people... and they annoy him." Is that really the best they could come up with? They couldn't be bothered to make a clever pun on seeing dead people, or make it a little less obvious that they're stealing the tagline from The Sixth Sense and altering it in the most unoriginal way possible?
September can be an ugly time for comedies-- Dane Cook movies do well here, for example-- so maybe it's pointless to expect much from Ghost Town. But hasn't Ricky Gervais given us reason to trust him in the past? Can't he just make an hour and a half movie of David Bowie making fun of him in song form?

As a huge Gervais fan myself I can see where you're coming from and sort of share your concerns about this movie.
However, whenever you see Ricky in a recent interview you're always reminded of what a comic genius he is, he defines comedy. I don't think he would sell out. I think this maybe just a sweet little movie as he sees it to give him more of a center stage in the US for his real work aka This Side of the Truth (Can't wait!).
Having said all that, I'll reserve my judgement until I actually see the movie. I think it's a bit ridiculous to judge the entire movie on a short trailer and 1 poster. It's like you can't wait to critisize it. Get a life.
@Nick
In your first paragraph you say you share Katey's concerns, and then i the last paragraph you call her names for having those same concerns... in effect insulting yourself.
