Paul Verhoeven has never been a guy to let labels define him. He made Robocop and Total Recall, then Starship Troopers and Showgirls, and last year shocked everyone by making a Dutch Holocaust comedy that people actually liked. Now he seems to be working on pissing off everyone who doesn’t resent him for Hollow Man, and is publishing a book about Jesus’ life—but not The Passion of the Christ style. This book is based on scientific research, and it’s making some pretty bold claims.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the book claims that Jesus was the result of Mary’s rape at the hands of a Jewish soldier—forget Joseph, not to mention that whole “son of God” thing. The book also says that Jesus was not, in fact, betrayed by Judas. Verhoeven apparently has long wanted to make a movie about this very subject, but wrote a book first to drum up interest in the project. Hey, if Mel Gibson can make his Jesus dream come true, why not Verhoeven?
The book’s publisher is still working on getting an English translation does, but you can guarantee that as soon as that book hits these shores, it’s going to come under fire. Maybe only the rabidly religious will care—Verhoeven isn’t exactly Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese in terms of popularity—but Verhoeven is surely courting controversy one way or another. So long as the controversy isn’t too intense or mean-spirited, it very well could result in a movie deal. Ah, the magic of Hollywood.

Verhoeven is on to something... 1600 years before the birth of Jesus, Mithra was born. Mithra was latered (like Jesus) considered the Son of God, he turned water into wine, walked on water, healed the sick, raised the dead. Sounds familar. The books of Matt, Luke, John and Mark copied the story of Mithra. And Mithra's story was copied somewhat from the Eyptian God, Orisis, who had a similar life. Jesus was a real person, and he was the son of a rape victim. In the Gospel of Thomas (which was not chosen for the Bible and writen shortly after Jesus's death by the apostol THomas HIMSELF) Jesus states that, "He who knows his father and mother shall be called the son of a whore". He is talking about himself. Rape victims, back in those times, were considered whores. Not fair, but true, and in parts of the world (Arabia) rape victims are still punished and considered whores.
