Russell Crowe re-teams with Gladiator director Ridley Scott this fall for the new mob movie American Gangster, but the two love working together so much that they’re already filming on another project. The AP reports that Crowe is currently in the Baltimore area shooting the new Ridley Scott thriller Body of Lies.
The film stars Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio in the story of a former journalist who comes out of Iraq with a shattered leg only to hired by the CIA to help in tracking down an Al Queda leader in Jordan. It’s based on a fictional counterterrorism tale by author David Ignatius. DiCaprio stars as the journalist Roger Ferris while Crowe plays his CIA contact, a division chief named Ed Hoffman.
So far, collaboration between Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott has been something of a mixed bag. Gladiator was good (but a little overrated), while their last movie, the wine-swilling mid-life crisis flick A Good Year was completely awful. If American Gangster ends up being good, does that mean Body of Lies has to suck?

Along with Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe is one of the best actors in the world today. His body of work, which has been mentioned several times on this blog, has been nothing short of fantastic. He brings something special to every movie he's in, even average movies like "A Good Year." He has a certain charisma that is hard to define. The issue with him is, one, he's not American, and two, he's pretty much anti-hollywood from the standpoint that he doesn't much care for the lifestyle and the people there.
If it wasn't for Hollywood politics, he should have won back to back Best Actor awards for Gladiator, which was a great movie (not just a "good" movie) and "A Beautiful Mind," which was a great movie that won several awards, but not for best actor. I agree with Mary Ann and Barbara..he should deserve an oscar nod for 3:10 to Yuma, but probably won't because that's going to be reserved for Hollywood's darling--George Clooney, who's an average actor at best.
I feel that due to Russell Crowe's excellent body of work, too much is expected of him. I too am sick of everyone saying "A Good Year" was awful. Most of the critics' reviews stated it was an entertaining, pleasant movie. I respect Mr. Crowe's choices in his movie career and I'm pleased that he chose a romantic comedy. I know that any movie he is in will be much better than what Hollywood has been turning out lately. He deserves an Oscar nomination for Ben Wade.
I am a big fan of Russell Crowe, There isn't anyone that can fill his shoes, none of the Hollywood wannabees He-men that are out there today. AGY was a good comedy, and this is not his first comedy, critics are so used to see him as Maximus or Bud White, that they didn't give the movie a chance. He is one of the Greatest Actors working today.
I'm so tired of critics panning Russell Crowe in "A Good Year." I saw it and thought it was very good, not great, but much better than Russell Crowe or Ridley Scott got credit for! I've enjoyed all the movies that Russell Crowe has been in and admire his talent and find his acting very believeable in the roles he takes on. I just saw 3:10 to Yuma and thoroughly enjoyed that. I hope he gets another Academy Award because he deserves too. He is one of the best, if not the best, actor I've ever had the pleasure to watch.
Gladiator was great, A Good Year was actually very good (inspite of critics like Mr. Tyler), and American Gangster is going to be sensational. Body of Lies can't miss!
