Scoop: Tim Burton Might Direct Pirates 4

By Katey Rich: 2008-10-07 22:48:56
Scoop: Tim Burton Might Direct Pirates 4 Big, big news on the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, courtesy of one of our most reliable tipsters. Our proven informant (who we're forced to keep anonymous) wants you to know the following info should be taken with a "grain of salt and a dose of pepper," things are still in motion, but here goes anyway. Wondering how they're going to make a whole Pirates movie with just Jack Sparrow? Or who else might return? Read on!

Most excitingly, there are talks of Captain Jack having a brother in the next movie, possibly to be played by Sacha Baron Cohen (perfect!) or Russell Brand (even more perfect!) Of course, that's probably just fantasy casting, but why would either of those comedians turn the role down? As we've mentioned before, the new movie might kick off a trilogy, which would revolve around Captain Jack's search for the Fountain of Youth.

Geoffrey Rush and director Gore Verbinski are apparently both planning to return, but... and this is a big maybe... Tim Burton might direct instead. Tim Burton! If there is a single director who could make people excited for a fourth Pirates movie, it has to be Burton. He's done so many amazing movies with Depp already, and might have the ability to make the new franchise as fresh and exciting as it was when the first movie came out. After all, Tim Burton is already making a movie for Disney, and if Alice in Wonderland is going well, you can see how they'd want to hang on to him

Again, this information is all up in the air, and could change at any moment. But still, this is the best news we've heard about the next Pirates movie, and pretty much the magic bullet it'll take to make most of us care. Russell Brand, get on the phone with your agent, and make this happen!

  1. The Movie Whore Says:

The last one was not good. It was horrible. I considered walking out of the theater when I saw it. I have no hope for 4th movie being any good.

  1. Charlotte Says:

Oh noooooo! I want that Keira and my Orlando come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. shane Says:

I absolutely hate Tim Burton, his weird directing style would completely ruin the entire Pirates franchise just like he ruined the Batman franchise!

  1. David Says:

I can't believe you deleted the critical comment that was hear earlier. My god what rules did that break?

Just stated that you have no sources and this is just one reporters wet dream.

  1. Pat Says:

Sacha Baron Cohen, maybe. Russell Brand is a worthless pile of crap and his involvement could singularly keep me away from the film, which would be a sad thing indeed. Otherwise, potentially interesting news. I heard on the news this morning that Johnny Depp has already been paid a $55 million advance to be in Pirates IV, so I think it's a safe bet that it's pretty close to happening. I'll be content of Orlando and Kiera don't come back; their story was stretched awfully thin to keep them involved in II and III, and I think their "arcs" were fully resolved. The last two Pirates movies got WAY too bloated and self-important to stay entertaining, and as much as I truly love Barbossa, I think they betrayed the entire first film by choosing to bring him back into the story. I desperately want to see a fourth one return to the simpler, funner, more swashbuckling roots of the first (still my absolute favorite of the three). Time for a very new direction, storywise. Tim Burton? Very interesting possibility there. Might be the right way to go for a fresher take on the Pirates filmes. I'd check it out, for sure.

  1. Katey Says:

David, I did my best to say clearly that this is just coming from one source and should really be classified as just a rumor. None of this has been reported as fact. Just enjoy the speculation!

  1. sean Says:

No!, pirates pirates of the caribbean 3 was the BEST so far!, I have 100% hope for pirates of the caribbean 4 and have NO WORRIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, what so ever for pirates of the caribbean 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=).

  1. Marc-OS Says:

If Russell Brand is in it, I will see it.

  1. Co Says:

I WANT MY ORLANDO BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! TOO! I like Jack Sparrow but how much more life can be dragged out of the slurry drunk routine. The makers of the film may think all we need is Johnny Depp but they just lost a loyal fan is there will be no Will Turner. I WANT MY ORLANDO BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! If fans did not like Pirates 3, i am sure #4 will not make them any happier. I WANT MY ORLANDO BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Luke Says:

I'm game for all of it, except for Sascha Baron Cohen and TIM BURTON!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!
    Stay away from it Tim
This movie does not need your "touch." I dont want it to be all Funhouse Mirror, and giant castles and Warped ships. NO TIM NO

  1. Ken Says:

I hope this "maybe" turns out to be FALSE.

    TIM BURTON?!

    um, no!
    a HUGE no!

The 1st three pirates movies were amazing because they stood out from all the rest.
Tim Burton has a style that he brings to EVERY ONE of his movies, for this franchise that's a BAD idea.

Look at Batman, look how amazingly successful it is now that the character and series are being directed by Christopher Nolan.

Remember when Tim Burton was in charge way back in 1989 of Batman?
It was the WRONG type of dark, and had such a goofy feel to it.
NEVER caught on. Don't get me wrong, its a classic, but it will never hold a candle to the new SMART Batman we see today.

This isnt some chocolate factory, or some dark demented grave yard full of spooks, or having anything to do with musicals. (For Gods sake, PLEASE no musical Pirates, PLEASE!)

As popular as Burton is with HIS style, this is NOT his field of expertise.

  1. Jemaine Says:

Burton's Batman never caught on? You're kidding, right? How old are you, 14? Perhaps you should check some box office tallys from 1989...

  1. ConRtist6491 Says:

I'm fine with Tim Burton directing as long as he doesn't get Danny Elfman to do the score. Hans Zimmer's themes on the first one and scores for the second two did so much in making that trilogy as successful as it was. To get rid of him and replace him with a different composer with a completely different style would totally change the mood of the film. Stick with Hans Zimmer and I'll be happy.

  1. jubal1 Says:

    Russell Brand?

Why would anyone want that stinking pile of talentless, arrogant, smug, deluded, self-indulgent crap anywhere near a billion dollar franchise is completely beyond me. The man is a talent void.

Sacha Baron Cohen on the other hand has proven time and again that he has the comic chops to bring something original and funny to the table.

  1. pIrate Says:

    @Shane
Tim Burton ruined the Batman Franchise?
Get your head on straight. Tim Burton's films set the stage for the later darkness of "The Dark Night".
Joel Schumacher ruined the Batman franchise with two of the most retarded visions of Batman ever. "Batman Forever" & "Batman and Robin"

The only film of late that plain sucked from Burton was "Charlie and the Chocolate factory".

  1. James Says:

2 & 3 were utter toilet. Anyone who enjoyed them were idiots and Gore could not direct his way out of a wet paper bag.

    Not holding out much hope.

  1. Sess90210 Says:

Pirates 1 ok, Pirates 2 fan freakin tastic, Pirates 3 not as good, and as for the new pirates 4??? i think it will do fairly well, probably not as well as Pirates 2, but it should be very entertaining. As for Bloom and Knightly...i could really care less if they come bak or not, Johnny Depp is the reason why these movies are so awsome, if he wasnt in it i wouldnt even bother going to see any of the Pirate movies. I don't rlly mind if Tim burton did direct this movie, he wouldnt be my first choice, but he has done alot of movies with Depp and the two work well together. All in all Pirates 4 should be a great movie, hopefully better then number 3.

  1. catzDrCats Says:

Tim Burton will destroy the Pirate franchise. If true, then it's a sign Disney has felt they've just about milked it for all it was worth. If he does direct, then you should expect direct to DVD releases following P4. And there will be, because they've caught that syndrome where you just keep pumping money and changes into something to recapture the excitement of the original, but just keep making it worse.

  1. Seadog Says:

Well I hope that another film comes along, its good for business, I am a pirate at heart and Jonnie Depp would give Errol Flyn a ran for his money

  1. John Redcorn Says:

They should not do a 4th one, they should a a prequel instead. If they did a 4th one it would just be the same shit all over again but with the fountain of youth. A prequel would tell a much better story.

  1. kaos Says:

    "shane Says:
I absolutely hate Tim Burton, his weird directing style would completely ruin the entire Pirates franchise just like he ruined the Batman franchise!"

Eh.. while I respect your opinion about Tim Burton (different strokes and so on), I think it would be in order to correct you a little bit on the above statement.

Before Tim Burton there was no Batman franchise. At all. Like another poster here said: Go back to 1989 and check. Tim's Batman was the biggest movie that year. Who killed the first wave of the Batman franchise was Joel Schumacker (spelling of name might be off here). Even George Clooney once stated that in an interview: "I think we killed the franchise".

So while your opinion about Tim Burton's directing style is all fine and dandy, please keep your facts straight before going on a rampage... :)

Oh, and as much as I love Tim Burton movies, I really don't want him to direct a "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. They belong to Gore Verbinski. My only hope is that they revert to the somewhat turned-down supernatural things happening in the first one, and lay a bit off the CGI.

Have a nice day and all...

  1. Lulz Says:

You are such a fucking downer.
the last one was a classic in my opinion, with better acting all around.

  1. Amalgamate Says:

just to correct ignorance, Tim Burton STARTED the Batman franchise (Joel Schumacher killed it)

Orlando and Kiera were dead weight-anyone can play those parts...

  1. Lori Says:

    YES YES YES!!!!

I HOPE TIM DOES IT!! AHHH!!!

But I don't want sacha baron cohen. Anybody but him, or some other stupid comedian. They should get some hot actor, because Johnny's hot, why not have a hot brother?

  1. Dee Fizzle Says:

ed burton dope....that sacha actor, who the hell is he? Oh okay Borat...hahaha, maybe he would work...they should find someone that would have good drunken swashbucklin chemistry like Jack Sparrow...Mike Myers? hehe...That dude can play almost any character thrown at him...Anyway, they should find someone that has the expertise, and go good as a pirate...A prequel sounds like a banger, then again, what if the first three were a prequel and the search for the fountain of youth was the actual event taking place or actual sequel trilogy? In reverse, kinda like Star Wars, yet the opposite way...With a new an even more formiddable foe, than the villain in the second and third films...They should bring back the Kraken, the humongous squid like octopus...that would be the shit...!!! They should lean toward a more spanish background story, and lavish scenery for this flick, how about throwing the bermuda triangle or the sunken city of atlantis into the story? Cortez? Or A humogous hammerhead shark...hehe, theres infinite possibilities...Anyway all the pirate films were dope, I just felt the giant sized voo doo priestess scene of calypso was a lil over the top!!!! The ending scene in At Worlds End, felt kinda like the Little Mermaid when they have the Ursula character get all huge and then theres a whirlpool...hehe....Anyway to make this short....Go Pirates 4!!! Lets do this!!!!

  1. pirate Says:

that is AWESOME. exactly what pirates 4 NEEDS

  1. rav Says:

The first was great. The 2nd was terrible. The 3rd was almost unwatchable. I only made it through half and have no desire to find out what happened.

I think they should remake 2 and 3, forget about 4...

  1. Bruce Shank Says:

This is just a made-up story. Notice the 3 names are the ones currently hawking the majority of press time conversation with Disney and current projects. Cohen, Burton and Russell Brand tied with Depp. Pirates won't be made without Rush or Gore. Don't expect it until 2012 at the earliest...WITHOUT any involvement from the previously listed 3 names. Good story to get the bloggers going though!!

  1. stephh Says:

well, i must say i love tim burton, but this really doesn't seem like his type of movie. I mean, his are quirky and cute and a little bit sinister, but this is a big epic action adventure movie. It's not in his style at all. Well, I'd be interested to see what it would turn out like, anyway.
I just hope that if they do make Pirates 4, they make Jack a little less drunk. He just got more and more insane throughout the movies. I think they should revert him back to more like he was in the first movie. Still insane and drunk-ish, but smart and clever, not running away from a scary octopus. More like he's sort of in control of the situation like in Pirates 1. yeah. I'm just glad Orlando Bloom will be gone.
    x

  1. Sandy Says:

It needs a sexy young Brit in it too. Depp and Cohen/Brand wont get enough females in. Depp's a bit old to lust after now.

They could have someone like Rob Pattinson

  1. Burton-esque Says:

Oh yes! PLEASE LET THIS BE BASED IN FACT!!!! I love Tim SO much, it would be AMAZING. Him and Johnny are just amazing together. Perhaps they could rope Helena into it too... The Holy Trio, together again =)

But if this is in fact merely gossip, then at least we have Alice to look forward to, right? Sigh, if I had my way Tim would direct every movie.... Like, ever. He is the closest to God you can get, seriously. YAY FOR TIMOTHY WILLIAM BURTON!

  1. Ris Says:

Tim Burton directing the movie alone would give me reason to watch it.
However, I pretty much refuse to pay money to see it if Russell Brand is in it. Ugh. Maybe if you paid ME, I would, but otherwise...no.
And I agree with Sandy...Rob Pattinson would be an awesome choice. Rob is going to be a big star, and he already has a great deal many fans--he would definitely draw in a crowd.

  1. Mel Says:

Yes!!! ORLANDO BLOOM - oh Will Turner has to come back. I would throw away a life in royalty to live beside him a pirate any day.

  1. Caroline Says:

Okay, if Gore is coming back (the original director) then why would Tim be directing?

  1. Heather Says:

Sandy, you are totally wrong! Johnny is flamming! I think he looks better now than he did back in 21 Jump Street days.

  1. vamp Says:

The second one was the worst and the third just dragged on. They're going to kill it with a fourth.

I'm not saying i won't see it in theaters opening week.

  1. Brad Says:

NO TIM BURTON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless maybe he's a co-director. but that makes for problems.

  1. BRAD Says:

NO TIM BURTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless maybe he's a co-director. But that makes for problems.

  1. Charlotte Says:

As much as I love Russell Brand, I don't think he'd be great as Sparrow's brother, although it'd be interesting to see. I like the sound of a brother joining the story.

To be honest, I'd rather see Gore Verbinski continue to direct. His last 3 films were great. Let sjust hope the 4th (and maybe 5th/6th) are as good as those..

  1. kida cullen Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    the movie will be elexent
    the need to do it!!!!!
