Tomorrow is Christmas and despite the fact that only three days ago Hollywood unleashed five new films, they've got more to throw your way in hopes that you'll be spending your time and money at the movie theater. Two of the new entries are the sorts of feel good movies that you would expect from a Christmas release. The other entry has no business being made at all, much less being released during the most wonderful time of the year.
Denzel Washington's The Great Debaters [Read the CB Review] will only open in 1,100+ theaters, but it's a big contender for some attention this week. Those cookie cutter feel good sports movies have gotten tiresome lately (what with Disney churning out around one each year for the last decade) so other kinds of underdog competition stories are getting the spotlight. Last year was the chance for enchanting Akeelah and the Bee to shine. This year it's Denzel and his Debaters. They won't be anywhere near the number one spot, but they shouldn't be number ten either.
The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep [Read the CB Preview] will go toe to toe with National Treasure: Book of Secrets [Read the CB Review] to try for the number one spot. Even though National Treasure has already been out for a week, its action packed adventure should still be going strong against Water Horse's sweet but childish appearance. Don't get me wrong, movies like Water Horse that are made for the kid in all of us are perfect for the holiday, but given Treasure's strong opening last weekend, the Loch Ness monster will have a tough swim to the top.
Third up, the inexplicable Alien Vs. Predator - Requiem [Read the CB Preview]. Requiem? Do they even know what that word means? It's a hymn or a memorial service for the dead. Are the predators and aliens going to set aside their acid blood and cloaking devices to take up harps and lutes and mourn all the humans they've so viciously killed? You can slap a pretty name on it, but the movie is still just the continued rape of two great franchises to produce a pointless, mindless third-party sequel. Nevertheless, fanboys will turn out to give it their cash and if they turn out in the same droves they did last time around, Requiem could be number two.,,maybe even number one. But I'm going to pretend that's impossible and say that I expect to see the sequel-sequel somewhere under Alvin and the Chipmunks.
