Tom Cruise Back As Lestat For Interview With A Vampire Sequel

By Josh Tyler: 2007-11-30 02:59:31
Tom Cruise Back As Lestat For Interview With A Vampire Sequel Tom Cruise’s revitalization of United Artists hasn’t exactly been a success yet. Their first film, Lions for Lambs, came and went from theaters almost completely unnoticed by audiences. They’ll probably do better with Bryan Singer’s upcoming movie Valkyrie, but they could really use a franchise or marquee genre project to make their name. The answer for UA could be vampires.

Blood Disgusting is running an unconfirmed rumor which says Cruise’s United Artists is in negotiations to land the rights to the Anne Rice novel “The Tale of the Body Thief”, fourth book in her “Vampire Chronicles” series. The first book in the series, Interview with the Vampire, was in 1994 made into what to my mind is still the best vampire movies ever made, starring Brad Pitt as Louis and Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat.

Here’s where this gets really interesting. Lestat is also the star of “The Tale of the Body Thief”. Tom Cruise owns United Artists a company which, right now at least, exists solely to produce Tom Cruise related projects. If United Artists is after this, then there’s a pretty good chance that they’re after it so Cruise can reprise the role of Lestat. Nothing else would make any sense.

It’s all rumor and speculation right now, but getting Cruise back in a pair of fangs could be absolutely huge, and get United Artists the kind of attention they need if they’re going to succeed. Since Interview with the Vampire, other books in the “Chronicles” series have been made into movies, all without Cruise, all done poorly, and all utter failures at the box office. Meanwhile Interview was a critical and box office smash, and in my opinion an instant vampire genre classic. I miss Interview era Cruise, and I’d love to see him back as the tortured vampire Lestat.

  1. Kris Says:

Actually, while Lestat is the main character in Body Thief, he not in his own body for most of the book... if Cruise is really reprising his role. then he wont be in it for very long...

  1. Yuna Says:

Kris is right. I don't remember much about the book, in all honesty, but I do remember that the majority of it is Lestat as not himself. He gets to experience sex, eating human food, etc. While Im sure they wouldnt have a problem casting another actor for non-vampire Lestat, it would be awkward seeing Tom Cruise's voice coming out of someone else's mouth, and vice versa.

  1. Kris Says:

Although one thing I do remember is that the man who now has his body goes on the run and Lestat wants it back... I think he even tries to get another vampire to bite him so he can at least be a vampire again. In this way I guess Tom could come back in a bigger capacity, as the Lestat "body thief"...

  1. Wisteria Says:

It will be tricky but Tom would actually have to play an evil Lestat gone wild gorging and gambling and rampaging every where he goes! The part of the mortal Lestat would have to go to another actor, because in the book the body thief exchanges bodies with him, and the moment Lestat is mortal again the other actor would have to take that part. In the book the actor is dark skinned and very well built, so possibly an actor like Vin Diesel would fit there, or hell! Even better The Rock! Damn....it's gonna be great! Tom would therefore be in most of the film as the evil Lestat, (the body thief) and the mortal Lestat would spend most of his time in the film, sick with the flu! lol Tripping and bumping his head on the first scene! Gorging on food and then having to do what he hasn't done in over 2 centuries!.....lol, it's gonna be a great movie!

  1. Mistlethrush Says:

Tom Cruise is a bit long in the tooth, if you will pardon the expression, to play a vampire that was turned at age 20 or 21. I know they do amazing things with make-up and such, but it'd be a stretch, and though Lestat is not inhabiting his own body, Raglan James, aka The Body Thief *is*, so Lestat's body *would* be in the film.

  1. danielle Says:

Tom was good in interview, but in this movie he'll most likely not Be Lestat. Some pretty Anglo-Indian will have to.

In the book He tries to get louis du point du lac to change him and it doesn't work. I wnder who might play David Talbot though, since he is in the majority of the book as well.

Marius is also there for a split minute...

They destroyed these characters in the QOTD.

  1. robin beirne Says:

wow, that'd rule! i love interview..

  1. Ellen Says:

I have been a big fan of Anne Rice and her vampire chronicles. I have most of the collection, and Tale of the Body Thief is no exception.

I did love both films, Interview and queen of the damned. Interview was by far my favorite of the two, mainly becuase it was done in the classic style, and I loved Tom Cruise's performance as Lestat. He really did do a good job of capturing the character as portrayed in the books.

Do not get me wrong, I think Stuart Townsend was a good Lestat as well, and I liked the queen of the damned, but it seemed to be set up more like a rock video instead of a classic style film. It was fun to watch, but my allegience is with Tom Cruise and Interview with the Vampire film.

I think Tom Cruise back as Lestat would be great, and he is made for the role as he has already proven. Of course it would be difficult considering the complicated nature of the story, but Tom Cruise, with the right director and cast could pull it off quite well.

I do hope they do pull it off, because we really could use some good classic vampire films. So many are so horror and disgusting. Tom Cruise as Lestat once again would really help put the vampire back on top as the favorite movie monster once again. I wish the company good luck and I look forward to seeing it someday if it works out.

  1. Manic V. Gatherheart Says:

I have not read The Tale of the Boy Thief, but I do agree that Interview was an amazing book and the movie was well put together. I really like Cruise being Lestat, he played him marvelously. Brad Pitt was pretty good as Louis, too.

The Queen of the Damned I thought was dissappointing. It explained and altered the storyline pretty badly in my opinion, but I did enjoy watching it, and I am sure that if those who had not read the books watched it, they would enjoy it more than the ones who read it, but movies are usually like that once they're made from books, hm?

Well, I think Tom Cruise is the only actor that can pull off Lestat really well and actually BE him. He masters the role, so if they do put this into action, he definately should be the first choice, regardless of age, because I would rather have the make-up be alright, the age be a bit off, but the acting be great instead of a youth who looks like him but can't act like him.

  1. Cheryl Says:

I enjoyed interview with a vampire far more than Queen of the damned its classic and it shows a more in-depth look into the vampire world instead as previously mentioned a more rock-gothic music video of sorts.I loved the actors Cruise and Pitt were right on the money, the tortured souls made my heart weep for them.If the body thief is made I would like to see Cruise as Lestat,Cruise has really captured Lestats persona and has felt what he has felt.Nothing would be greater then to see Tom Cruise in action as Lestat again bring it on.And the Rock or Vin Diesel no way!!!For a vampire movie hell noo no offense to them but I'd like to see them work on there acting alittle more before attempting to capture a spot in one of what will be a great vampire movie.

  1. rebecca Says:

how fantastic would it be to bring them back? Tom Cruise is Lestat as far as i'm concerned i agree with all those that feel he's the only one that captures not only the moods of Lestat but the looks and sense of humor! i have read and have all the chronicles and tale of the body thief is a fab book. it may be tricky but they can pull it off-its show biz!

But will we see Brad as Louis? i cant imagine anyone else playing that part either! and lets hope they portray Marius properly, after all he too has blonde hair and blue eyes just like Lestat! (even though he'll only be there a split second)!

What a great film it would be! wish they'd have made TVL, but hey ho, bring on the vamps! lets bring them back with all the charm and charisma they had back in 1997!

  1. Jose Says:

I believe that both Interiew with a Vampire and Queen of the Damned we're both very good films but made in two diffrent ways as Interview with a Vampire was made in the classic movie style way. The Queen of the Damned was made as rather a large music video, and all mainly structured around Lestat's music.

I personally loved Interview with a Vampire more then Queen of the Damned. The Queen of the Damned film lacked alot of what was in the book, a very large sum, the majority of it to be exact.

And Tom Cruise returning as Lestat..
I am not sure if this will work out this time around.
Cruise's youth was a large thing in Inerview with a Vampire
And that was filmed over 14 years ago.
So, perhaps Cruise as Lestat again may not be the greatest choice.
