I saw Paranoid Park at the New York Film Festival last fall, and I’ve been wondering when this small, weird little movie would finally see release. It looks like IFC is finally ready to put it out there, and with their new trailer, they’ve captured the moodiness and tension of the film really well. A low-budget drama about a kid who hangs around a skate park, Paranoid Park deals with murder, sex and the trials of growing up through a distinctly teenage point of view. All the skateboarding shots in the trailer probably intend to appeal to a Lords of Dogtown kind of crew, and while there’s some impressive skateboarding in the film, it’s much more contemplative and dark than you might expect.
But the trailer gets across a lot of it, including the naturalistic acting from the teenage actors, most of whom have never been in a movie before. That’s one of the amazing things about the movie that I had forgotten, how great it was to see real teenagers on film. If you’re tired of the fantasy high school world of Juno, Paranoid Park might be exactly what you need.
Check out the trailer below, and remind yourself of the awkwardness and strange emotions of being a teenager. Hopefully you can’t relate to the murder part, though.
