The fight over who will be Superman is already causing a rift between WB and their director du jour Bryan Singer and I couldn’t be more pleased.
Fansite Superman-V.com is reporting that after a meeting with Bryan Singer, Tom Welling has verbally agreed to be Superman in the upcoming movie. This is somewhat confusing in light of Singer’s past insistence that he was only willing to hire an unknown for the part, and as a result had begun a nationwide casting search to find someone. Rumor explains this deception as a rift between WB and Singer, with some Warner Brothers execs unhappy with Welling as a choice and demanding Singer search for an unknown. Apparently, the casting call was mandated by Warner Brothers to prompt Singer to see if he could find someone better before signing Welling.
Whatever the truth, the process is still ongoing. A verbal agreement (if indeed one even exists) isn’t a contract and as we’ve seen in the past, nothing goes smoothly when we’re talking Superman. For myself, I wish Singer nothing but ill will for abandoning X-Men. Maybe that sounds a little vicious, but X-Men is a better property and it would have been nice to see Singer finish the story he started with the ending of X2 rather than jumping ship for a higher profile and infinitely more troubled and inferior franchise the first time someone waved a big check under his nose, thus dooming the luminous X-Men franchise to development hell.
Bitterness aside, at least he’s got the good sense to try and cast Welling. Or failing Welling, go with an unknown. No more Nic Cage rumors is a bit of a relief.
