Will Smith Can't Replace Tom Cruise

By Katey Rich: 2008-07-20 17:47:48
Will Smith Can't Replace Tom Cruise Is there anyone out there anxiously awaiting Tom Cruise's next film role? Well, except for his supposedly super-secret cameo in Tropic Thunder, that is. The former King of Hollywood has been slipping in status lately, and according to some rumors, that might be costing him his role in the political thriller Edwin A. Salt.

But now Moviehole.net is stepping in to say that's simply not true, knocking down rumors that the star of Hancock would step in instead. "Will Smith has not been approached to star. Cruise is the only actor who has been approached.” A "representative of the film" later stepped in to clarify that, in fact, no one is actually officially in the part. "Tom is not set for the film. Cruise has never been officially attached to the project, but will decide on his involvement once the new script is finished. He was previously concerned that the part was too close to his Mission Impossible character."

Frankly, I'm finding it hard to muster up the energy to care. The phrase "political thriller" is so generic that it immediately carries an air of "been there, done that." Unless you're making something innovative on par with The Bourne Identity, these kinds of movies tend to fly right past audiences. And, as has been proven recently, even a Tom Cruise movie can fly under the radar these days. And hey, even if this character is similar to his Mission: Impossible character, it's probably a good thing. It could help us get back to the glory days of Tom's career.

I'm anxiously awaiting his next role despite all his nuttiness Tom Cruise is an excellent actor and Valkyrie looks really awesome

  1. Jack Says:

And pray tell what was so "innovative" about "The Bourne Identity"? Oh, right, because we've never seen a movie about the Eeeeeeeeeeevil CIA trying to assassinate people and junk for the purposes of being EEEEEEEEEVIL. Wow. Real innovative there.

  1. Meg Says:

I'm not sure I agree with this writer's interpretation of what's innovative or not, but it might just be my hackles rising over the "is anyone awaiting his next role" bit.

Personally, not only am I looking forward to his TT cameo, but I'm REALLY looking forward to Valkyrie. Everything I've heard about it sounds great, and the trailer's on my list of videos I watch when I'm bored, because it just has such a good cadence to it. I think it looks awesome, and it's about time people stopped trashing Tom Cruise and remembered why we liked him in the first place: he's a brilliant actor.
