New Spider-Man movies have been big news in the past week. We’ve heard that Sony has a script that they want to expand into two films that would shoot back to back. We’ve heard when Marvel's Film Group would like to see the webslinger shoot his way back into theaters. That’s a pretty big deal considering all sequel talk seemed to die the second Spider-Man 3 appeared in theaters. There’s no denying the third picture was a misstep for the franchise, but was it a franchise killer like Batman and Robin? I don’t think so.
If Spider-Man is to move forward, it’s almost guaranteed that it will be with a new cast, something producers are more than aware of. In fact, according to our friends at Latino Review, they’re already tossing around names to replace Toby Maguire as the next Spidey.
Leading the race is Patrick Fugit, best known for his roles in Wristcutters: A Love Story, Saved!, and Almost Famous. If Fugit were to take the role, we would probably be looking at a return to Spidey’s high school days (or at least keeping the webslinger in college), since Fugit is seven years younger than Maguire. I haven’t seen much of Fugit’s work, but some of his promo shots look pretty Peter Parkerish to me.
Of course, what’s a list with only one name? Apparently producers are considering someone else: The Forbidden Kingdom’s Michael Angarano, who has already donned a super-hero costume in Sky High. Angarano is even younger than Fugit, but again, I could see it happen. In fact, Angarano would provide a lot more of the sarcastic witticism attitude Spider-Man is supposed to have, assuming the script gives it to him to work with.
Now, El Mayimbe is very specific in stating offers haven’t been extended to either actor yet, so Maguire could still be in the running or this could just be a pipe dream that never manifests. Regardless, it’s kind of fun to have some Spidey rumors to play with again. Assuming Maguire doesn’t step back into the websuit, who do you think would make a good Spidey?
UPDATE! Sony Pictures has denied this rumor. For more information, go here.

Eh... I don't know... why step on Maguires toes? I know hes getting older and not too thrilled about playing the character anymore, but I'm not sure id go for either one of these kids, if anything I think Fugit is a better actor, but I don't really see him as Spidey.
No one was really thrilled when Tobey Maguire was cast in the first Spider-Man movie. Look how that turned out. He made it his own, which is why many people aren't all excited about Spidey 4 if he doesn't return. Who knows, either one could be a great Peter Parker.
I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be a great fit. He has proven himself in a number of great roles like Mysterious Skin and Brick. The Lookout should have been his blockbuster type role, had Miramax wanted it to succeed. He manages to bring a shining complexity to his roles where in lesser hands could've just been cold and one-dimensional. He gets under the skin of the characters he portrays, not just being the characters, but becoming them. He has proven his mantle and he deserves at least a shot at this type of role.
