TV Recap: Desperate Housewives - We're So Happy You're So Happy

TV Recap: Desperate Housewives - We're So Happy You're So Happy Things change in 5 years – that’s what Mary Alice (the dead friend of Wisteria Lane) wants us to remember. People grow closer in spite of their pasts; People grow apart even though you think they are perfect together. People have kids, people get hitched, and people are released from prison. You know, things change.

The show begins with Susan in bed with her boy toy – you know the one with the terrible haircut. Actually, the cut isn’t bad, it just looks bad – kinda like a rug. His name is Jackson, and he is lucky enough to meet Mike this week. This monumental occurrence happens when the Boy Toy runs out to pick up the morning paper in Susan’s robe. Lucky (or not) for Mike, the robe isn’t tied all the way. Mike’s a little upset – not that Susan is sleeping with the guy, but that M.J. (that’s Maynard) might be around an unsavory character. Neither Susan nor Jackson are excited about the fact that Mike has declared that he will be having lunch with the Boy Toy. And promptly, M.J. gets to meet his mom’s new friend.

Edie and her new man are discussing the fact that she wants to move because even after 5 years, no one will take her seriously. She confronts him about why they had to move back to Wisteria Lane, but he doesn’t answer.

Gaby and Carlos are having money issues (as usual) and she badgers him into taking a job at their old Country Club massaging their old rich friends.

Back to Susan and Jackson. Susan is choosing his outfit, and clueing him in on appropriate topics. She warns him that if he doesn’t do well, she will have to choose between him and M.J. – and he will lose. That’s good to know. By the way, doesn’t Susan have another daughter? Remember Julie? They have yet to mention her at all.

Lynette finally appears in this episode, and she’s trying to find out if the twins are friends with a kid who was just convicted of dealing drugs at school. They aren’t talking, so she asks Parker if he knows. He shows her Porter’s “Silverfizz” (aka facebook, myspace, etc) and she tries to get a kick tutorial on setting up her own page.

Bree peeps in too, and she is looking at the cover of her new book with her son, Andrew, and her apparently-still-husband Orson. Orson and Bree argue about her using Van De Kamp (her late first husband’s last name) and not Hodge (her current last name.) Bree wins, and the name stays the same.

Edie’s new man confronts Mrs. McCluskey about their teasing. He tries to explain that the good-natured ribbing isn’t cutting it any more. Mrs. M refuses, saying that if Edie wants things to change, she needs to ask herself. She also mentions that he’s got some nerve, and that he doesn’t know her. He proves that he knows her better than she thinks, and she’s hurt that it’s so obvious that she’s just a little old lonely lady. She tells him to go, and it seems that there is more he wants to say, but he doesn’t.

Jackson returns from his time with Mike, and it seems they hit it off. They strip down and start making out, until he starts doing some of Mike’s old moves. Jackson explains it just slipped out – and it was not just about her. We get a little TMI on Mike, and she won’t let Jackson touch her anymore for the night.

Bree stops by Gaby’s and un-invites her from the party she was invited to earlier. The problem is that Carlos works at the Country Club, and it is too awkward for them to be socializing with “the help.” This of course, sends Gaby into hysterics.

Lynette starts up her own Silverfizz account, and pretends to be a girl from his high school. They chat, and Tom catches her – they are glad to find out he doesn’t hang out with the earlier mentioned drug kid. Tom tells her to cut it out, but she is so intrigued by the Porter that she doesn’t know – she keeps it up. Unfortunately, they chat enough that he starts to have feelings for her.

Mrs. McCluskey lost her cat, and she’s out looking for him, when Mr. Williams comes over to ask what’s wrong. She explains, and he says he’ll help her if she apologizes to Edie. He even makes her shake hands – weird.

Bree is featured on “Gourmet Americana” – a national radio show. The host is a little snippy and makes sure that Bree knows she’s going to be at the party she is catering that night (the one that Gaby is no longer invited to.) The host asks about Mr. Van De Kamp, and Bree simply says he’s passed on. Orson is none too happy.

Porter borrows Lynette’s old Yeats book of poetry, and she tells him that her first boyfriend gave her one of these poems. He blows her off, and runs out.

Bree is freaking out about the host of GA, Linda, being at the party. Orson confronts Bree about her gaffe – and he wants to know if it’s about him being an ex-con. Bree won’t straight out admit that’s the reason, but it definitely plays a part. (You know, every time I see Kyle MacLachlan, I want to yell COOP! – I adored Twin Peaks)

Unfortunately, we go back to Susan, who is getting a message from Jackson cancelling their date. It’s Wednesday, and he’s got a date with Mike, though he lies to Susan about it.

Porter sends his “poetry girl” a poem – and it’s the same one that her first boyfriend gave her. Uh-oh. Tom kills me with his Oedipus references – and Lynette tries to break it off with an email.

Gaby is straightening Carlos’ tie as they get set to crash the party they aren’t invited to – and they use the Service Entrance to do it. Bree busts them in the kitchen, and doesn’t condone their plan – but doesn’t stop them either.

Susan attempts to bust Jackson with Mike, but she doesn’t find him. Jackson told Mike that they can’t hang out – she talks to Mike about the “ear thing”, and she realizes Mike is really trying to take the high road. Mike tells her he doesn’t judge her for the events that caused them to break up, and she realizes that they can still have a relationship. By the way he looks at her when she leaves, I’m thinking he still loves her – though I’m not sure why.

When Susan gets back home, Jackson is there with his old friend, who really did come into town. Karl (the original ex) is there, and Jackson gets the pleasure of meeting him too. Ah, a mention of Julie. Jackson kills me when he asks if there are other ex’s.

Gaby is working her magic, and gets herself invited to another party. They end up being busted by the hostess and Carlos is escorted by two large men outside. Oops!

Mrs. M finally gets over to Edie and makes her apology. Edie can tell that they old gal is upset, and Mrs. M reveals the cat is still missing. She asks Edie to tell her husband (who I finally figured out is named Dave) that they are square.

Carlos asks Gaby what is going on, and she is frustrated by their social position, by her figure, by their lack of money. Carlos tells them that those rich people are not any happier than they are – in fact, he is the happiest he’s ever been. She seems to get it, and they are good too.

Tom reads Lynette’s Dear John letter, and says it’s great. She hits send, then he mentions that she needs to change the “love, mom.” Oops – again.

Porter runs down to see her at her laptop, and runs out again. They meet back up in the kitchen, and she tries to apologize. She explains that she was just trying to retrieve their lost relationship. He isn’t interested in her reasons, and it breaks both of their hearts that it’s over – in different ways, of course.

Bree comes home to Orson, and she’s ecstatic about the way the party went. The host of Gourmet Americana loved her and her food. Orson couldn’t care less. Bree promised him a pot roast, and he makes her deliver. He’s got a crazy look in his eye, and she obliges – mostly out of fear. Nice.

Mrs. M returns home to find her cat safe and sound. And Mary Alice comes back to tell us about good neighbors. After her little speech about good neighbors protecting each other, we see Mrs. M visiting Katherine, asking to use her computer to check out Dave (Edie’s husband.) From next week’s previews, I’d say she finds something – and it isn’t positive.
