The true predecessor to YouTube, America’s Funniest Home Videos offers exactly what its title promises: home videos, sent in by everyday people, documenting the ridiculous things their children, pets, elderly relatives or possibly otherwise-competent adults do. The audience chooses their favorite clip to win $10,000, with second place earning $3,000 and third place earning $2,000. If you’re not familiar with the concept, or Bob Saget’s 8-year reign as host during the ‘90s, then what else were you doing on Sunday nights that whole time?
Wow, who knew this show was on the air? While I admit to taking time out of my busy schedule as an eight-year old to watch this show, I wonder how my mother will ever forgive me for monopolizing the TV for so long. Not to say the show doesn’t have its merits-- people getting kicked in the crotch or kittens falling off of TV sets will always be funny, as the vast majority of content on YouTube continues to prove. Still, is there anyone who can actually get excited about this show? If nothing else I guess I’m just glad it’s still there, an old, consistent friend on the airwaves that I still will never make time to watch. Though if, by the time I have an 8-year old, this show is still on the air, maybe I’ll reconsider.
