2007 Fall TV Preview: Reaper On The CW - Premieres 9/25 Reaper - Season 1

Premieres: Tuesday, September 25, at 9:00 p.m. EST
Network: CW
Creator(s): Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas
Starring: Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine, Missy Peregrym, Rick Gonzalez, Ray Wise and Valerie Rae Miller
Website: CWtv.com

When the lead character Sam (Bret Harrison) turns 21, he learns that his parents sold his soul to the devil before he was even born. This explains why his parents always let him off the hook for everything while they encouraged Sam’s younger brother Kyle to be an over achiever. While Kyle was getting straight A’s, Sam was opting not to go to college and live the life of the typical go-nowhere slacker, complete with a dead-end job and no girlfriend. Though he’s had a crush on his sexy coworker, Andi (Missy Peregrym), he has yet to make a move.

On his 21st birthday, Sam learns the truth about his destiny. In order to pay back his parents’ debt to the devil (played by Ray Wise), Sam has to find escaped souls, who are now living on earth, disguised as regular people, and capture them so they can be returned to hell where they belong.

Naturally, Sam tries to resist the demands made on him by the devil but eventually, with the help of his friends Sock and Ben (Tyler Labine and Rick Gonzalez) he begins to realize the job isn’t so bad, even if it means battling with some seriously evil people.

Since I’m still not totally over The CW canceling my beloved Veronica Mars, I’ve been a bit resistant to considering watching any of their new programs this fall. Reaper has been the one exception to this (so far) since word got out last spring that Kevin Smith (Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma) would be directing the first episode of the series. Smith’s name alone was enough for me to consider that this show might be worth watching. Granted, Smith didn’t actually write the episode but I figure if he thought the concept was good enough to direct the pilot, there must be something to Reaper, right?

Based on the promo video on CW’s website (check it out below), Reaper looks like a superhero series that doesn’t take itself too seriously. This could either translate to hilarious or just plain silly, depending on the writing.

The one thing that concerns me is that, while Reaper has a supernatural comic-booky twist to it, I cant help but wonder if it will end up being compared to NBC’s new series, Chuck, which also happens to center on an underachieving slacker who is suddenly given special abilities and a hero-like mission. Whether or not that will be the case remains to be seen. In the meantime, I cant wait to see if Reaper is worthy of Veronica Mars’ timeslot.
