After a horrific car accident, Samantha (Appelgate), a psychiatrist, is given an experimental operation which leaves her with extraordinary strength---oh, wait; wrong show.
In Samantha Who, a new sitcom on ABC, Samantha comes down with amnesia after an accident. As she tries to pick up the pieces of her life, she comes to find that she wasn’t exactly the nicest person in the world. In fact, she was self-involved and had no real relationships. Sam now struggles with her newfound desire to be a good person, while her old personality is fighting to come out.
I’m kind of ambivalent about this show. I’m not big on sitcoms, so it really takes something special to get me hooked. This is an interesting premise, but it almost seems too gimmicky to me. It sounds like it could have a great season one, but what about season four? Is she still going to be struggling with amnesia, or is it going to become a sitcom about a nice girl and her friends; and if that's the case, why not just, you know, name the show Samantha?
On the other hand…Sookie! Melissa McCarthy from Gilmore Girls is on this show, so that automatically makes it worth at least checking out. Also, Jennifer Esposito was awesomely creepy on Rescue Me this summer, and Jean Smart was brilliant on 24. That much TV firepower means that I’ll definitely catch the premiere. Beyond that…I’m not making any promises.
